The 2016 Malaysian Grand Prix will take place at the Sepang International Circuit in Selangor this Sunday 2nd October. There are just eight points separating Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton at the top of the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship table, and with just six races remaining, the pressure is on both drivers to make every one of them count. Hamilton is the current favourite with bookmakers to win the race, but Rosberg isn’t being offered at much bigger odds, so which of the Mercedes drivers is most likely to fare best on the day?

How the Bookies See It

  • Race Winner: Lewis Hamilton 5/4, Nico Rosberg 11/8, Daniel Ricciardo 9/1 – William Hill
  • Fastest Qualifier / Race Winner Double: Lewis Hamilton 13/8, Nico Rosberg 9/4, Daniel Ricciardo 20/1 – Paddy Power
  • Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg Combination Podium Finish: Yes 4/7, No 5/4 – Bet365

Form

  • Lewis Hamilton finished in third place in the Singapore Grand Prix on 18th September, and the fact that the race was won by his Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg meant that he lost his position at the top of the Drivers’ Championship table. Hamilton had started the race third on the grid, and although he put in a decent performance on the day, he couldn’t quite manage to overtake Rosberg, who started in pole position, or Daniel Ricciardo, who started second on the grid. Hamilton now has 265 points, and trails by 8 points to Rosberg.
  • Nico Rosberg might have won the Singapore Grand Prix, but it was a close-run affair, and the Mercedes driver finished less than half a second in front of Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo. Of course, the narrow margin of victory doesn’t mean a thing as far as points earned are concerned, and the win enabled Rosberg to regain his lead in the race for the Drivers’ Championship title. Rosberg has now won eight Grand Prix races this season, which is two more than Hamilton, and has earned 273 points.
  • Daniel Ricciardo started second on the grid in Singapore and finished the race in the same position. The fact that he finished less than half a second behind Rosberg, and over seven seconds in front of Hamilton, will have encouraged the Australian quite a bit, but he has yet to win a Grand Prix race this season and his latest second place finish may also have proven to be quite frustrating. Ricciardo is third in the Drivers’ Championship table, with 179 points.

Sports.net’s View

A few months ago we would have snapped up the odds that are currently available about Lewis Hamilton winning the Malaysian Grand Prix, but he has now lost three races in a row, and we have to look back to the German Grand Prix at the end of July for his most recent victory. We wouldn’t hesitate to bet on Hamilton if he starts from pole position, but Rosberg clearly knows how to win from the front too, and the German driver will be keen to continue doing so, especially now that he has the Drivers’ Championship within his sights.

Once again, we expect Mercedes to win this race, but whether it will be Hamilton or Rosberg who will get the job done is something of a coin toss. We will therefore bet on Hamilton and Rosberg achieving a combination podium finish, just as they have managed in their last three races.

  • Sports.net’s Top Tip: Hamilton and Rosberg to achieve a Combination Podium Finish at 4/7 – Bet365

*Please note, odds may change as the race approaches.
