The seventh Grand Prix on the 2017 Formula 1 racing calendar will take place this Sunday 11 June in Montreal, Canada. It has been an eventful season so far, and Sebastian Vettel heads the Drivers’ Championship table thanks to him winning three of the previous six races and achieving podium finishes in the other three. Lewis Hamilton, who had been the favourite for the championship, is currently in second place, and will be keener than ever to narrow the 25 point gap between himself and the German leader. The excitement is definitely building as the season progresses, but who do the bookies have installed as their favourite to win the Canadian Grand Prix?

How the Bookies See It

  • Canadian Grand Prix Winner: Sebastian Vettel 6/5, Lewis Hamilton 11/8, Valtteri Bottas 11/2 – Ladbrokes
  • 2017 Drivers’ Championship: Sebastian Vettel 4/6, Lewis Hamilton 6/4, Valtteri Bottas 33/1 – SkyBet
  • 2017 Constructors’ Championship: Mercedes 4/6, Ferrari 6/5, Red Bull 200/1 – Bet365

Form

  • Lewis Hamilton failed to achieve a podium finish for the second time this season in the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday 28 May. A disastrous qualifying performance saw the Brit start the race in 13th place on the grid, and whilst he did his best to improve on that position, he could do no better than to finish in seventh place, and that was largely thanks to him being the last to change his tyres. Hamilton has won two races this season, for a 33.33% success rate, and currently stands on 104 points in the Drivers’ Championship table.
  • Sebastian Vettel started second on the grid for the Monaco Grand Prix, with his Ferrari team mate Kimi Raikkonen in pole position. Surprisingly, Vettel found it easy to take the lead when Raikkonen pitted several laps earlier than he did, and from there it was plain sailing for Vettel to stay in front to the finish. Hamilton later said that Ferrari must have decided to favour Vettel as their main driver, and orchestrated things so that the German could take maximum points. Whether or not that is true, Vettel did just that, giving him his third win of the season and extending his Drivers’ Championship lead to 129 points.
  • Valtteri Bottas was much better in qualifying than his Mercedes team mate in Monaco, and began the race in third place on the grid. He held that position, ahead of Max Verstappen, until the middle of the race, when Daniel Ricciardo took advantage of a golden opportunity to overtake both drivers. Bottas finished the race in fourth place, giving him 12 points and bringing his season total to 75, but the Finn won’t have been happy to have missed out on what would have been his fourth podium finish of the year so far.

Sports.net’s View

Lewis Hamilton’s poor performance during qualifying in Monaco undoubtedly played a key role in his ability to fare no better than seventh in the race itself, but the Brit hasn’t had a great season thus far, and although he has managed to achieve two wins, his main rival Sebastian Vettel has been the more consistent driver overall.

Whether or not Ferrari are already adopting a strategic approach to the season, Vettel has done enough to earn the confidence of bettors, and it is entirely reasonable that the bookmakers have made him the favourite to win the Canadian Grand Prix.

Whilst we expect Hamilton to bounce back to form at some point, we will follow the form and side with Vettel to earn his fourth win of the season this Sunday in Montreal.

  • Sports.net’s Top Tip: Sebastian Vettel to win the Canadian Grand Prix – 6/5 at Ladbrokes
