How the Bookies See it:

Form

  • Germany may have left many of their big stars at home, but the group of young players selected by Joachim Loew have not disappointed as the current world champions remain on course to capture their first ever Confederations Cup title. An opening win over Australia by three goals to two may have been a little closer than many expected, but it was a win that set the German juggernaut rolling. A draw with an experienced Chile side followed, before a convincing 3-1 win over African Champions Cameroon saw Die Mannschaft top a tricky looking Group B.
  • Mexico entered their seventh Confederations Cup with high hopes of reaching at least the final four. Juan Carlos Osorio’s men certainly achieved their goal, but they were made to sweat at times in what was arguably the easier of the two groups. An early draw with Portugal saw El Tricolor twice come from behind to snatch a point, before a narrow 2-1 win over New Zealand gave the team in green a fantastic opportunity of reaching the semi finals. Victory over Russia in the final game sent the Mexicans through, but only after the hosts had taken a surprise lead.

Sports.net’s View

Germany’s decision to travel to Russia with a squad boasting an average age of just 22 did raise some eyebrows, but Joachim Loew’s gamble seems to be paying off. Seven goals in the group stages have proved that this new generation is not frightened to attack, and it could be this quality that helps sink Mexico. Timo Werner is the competition’s joint top goalscorer with two goals, alongside fellow countryman Lars Stindl. Both players are highly tipped to find the back of the net at any point in this game, with Betfred offering odds of 7/4 on both, while a successful link up between to two could help their team run riot, with odds of 10/3 being offered by Sky Bet on Germany netting three or more times.

Mexico may have relied on coming from behind in all three of their matches so far, but they certainly cannot count on this method of victory working against a ruthlessly efficient German outfit. Yes, the North Americans are capable of scoring, with Javier Hernandez (priced at 6/4 with Bet365) capable of inflicting damage, but it is unlikely that the German backline will be breached on more than one occasion. With that in mind, a win for the European giants in a game which sees both teams find the net could be worth a punt (3/1 with William Hill), but a win to nil for the side currently ranked third in the world could be the more likely outcome.

  • Sports.net top tip: Germany to win to nil - 14/5 with BetVictor
