Lewis Hamilton brought his season and his chances of winning the Drivers’ Championship title back to life just over a week ago by winning the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. The Brit will now be looking to achieve similar success in the 2017 Hungarian Grand Prix, which takes place at the Hungaroring in Mogyoród this Sunday 30 July. Hamilton is now just one point behind leader Sebastian Vettel after ten races, so who do the bookmakers expect to win this weekend?

Form

  • Lewis Hamilton’s fifth British Grand Prix victory means that he has now equalled the record achieved by Jim Clark and Alain Prost before him. Whilst that win will mean a great deal to Hamilton as far as the history books are concerned, the success has also helped to dramatically revive his hopes for this season. The Mercedes driver was some 20 points behind Sebastian Vettel in the Drivers’ Championship table before the Silverstone race, but he started on pole and put in a fantastic performance to take the maximum of 25 points. That puts him on 176 points for the season, which is just one point behind his German rival.
  • Sebastian Vettel was third on the grid when he started the British Grand Prix, but a series of unfortunate events – including his brakes catching fire at the start of the race and a late puncture – meant that he could only manage to finish in seventh place. That result added six points to his tally, which was enough for him to retain his position at the top of the Drivers’ Championship table, but he now leads by a single point, so the Ferrari driver will be hoping to experience considerably less bad luck in Hungary.
  • Valtteri Bottas continued to impress in the British Grand Prix. The Finn started ninth on the grid after receiving a five-place grid penalty for an unscheduled gearbox change, but he drove superbly, and had managed to get into fifth place by the eighth lap. He improved through the ranks slowly but surely, and eventually ended the race in second place to secure his seventh podium finish of the season and add 18 points to his tally. That puts Bottas on a total of 154 points, which is just 23 behind the current leader.

Sports.net’s View

There is no disputing that Lewis Hamilton was the star of the show in the British Grand Prix, but the dazzling performance of Bottas should not be overlooked, and the Mercedes team will have been thrilled with the 1-2 result. Whilst Sebastian Vettel had some back luck, even without that he would still have had plenty of work to do to prevent Hamilton from winning.

Hamilton has now won four Grand Prix races this year, with Vettel on three and Bottas on two. The British driver has already won five Hungarian Grands Prix, which is more than anyone else, so given his current form we will side with Hamilton to win for a sixth time in Hungary this Sunday.
