The 2017 Women’s UEFA Champions League Final will take place this Thursday 1 June at Cardiff City Stadium. The two teams that will be battling it out for the title are Lyon and Paris Saint-Germain, which means that it will go down as the first all-French final since the competition began (as the Women’s Cup Finals) in 2001. Lyon are likely to be favoured to win thanks to having won the competition three times previously, but Paris Saint-Germain didn’t get to the final by accident, so maybe they are poised to spring an upset at a generous price.

How the Bookies See it:

  • Winner: Lyon 2/5, Draw 3/1, PSG 11/2 - Paddy Power
  • Correct Score: Lyon 1-0 6/1, Lyon 2-0 13/2, 1-1 7/1 - Paddy Power

Form

  • Lyon, aka Olympique Lyonnais, have a superb record in this competition, having previously reached the final five times. They won on three of those occasions, in 2011, 2012 and 2016, so they will be coming here as defending champions. Their most recent Women’s Champions League match on 29 April saw them lose 0-1 to Manchester City Women, but they beat City 3-1 in the first leg, giving them a 3-2 aggregate win to reach the final. Lyon have won two of their last four Champions League matches, scoring a total of five goals, for an average of 1.25 goals per match.
  • Paris Saint-Germain have reached the final of this competition just once previously, and that was in 2015, when they lost 2-1 to FFC Frankfurt. They will be coming here on the back of a 2-0 win over Barcelona Femeni on 29 April, following a 3-1 win in the first leg. Paris Saint-Germain have won three of their last four Champions League matches, scoring a total of nine goals, for an average of 2.25 goals per match.

Sports.net’s View

Whilst the goal stats for the Champions League matches played this year would appear to give Paris Saint-Germain the edge, Lyon clearly have the upper hand as far as experience in this competition is concerned. The goal stats would also look quite different if we were to include matches that took place in the latter months of 2016, with Lyon having achieved 9-0 and 8-0 wins over FC Zürich Frauen, which puts the advantage squarely back in the capable hands of the defending champions.

The fact that Lyon are through to the final for the sixth time (in the last eight years, no less) means that they have now matched the record of FFC Frankfurt, who have also reached the final six times. If Lyon win this Thursday then they will also match Frankfurt’s tally of four Champions League titles, and that fact will be quite a motivator for the favourites.

Although we expect Paris Saint-Germain to give this game their all in their pursuit of their first win in this competition, we believe that Lyon are the stronger team overall, and we will therefore tip the latter to win this first all-French final.
