The 2017 MotoGP championship arrives in Australia for round 16 of a title race that is quickly becoming a two-way contest. The Michelin Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix will be held at the Phillip Island circuit on Sunday 22nd October.

The fantastic Phillip Island track, located 87 miles southeast of Melbourne, is one of the most iconic and exhilarating venues in world motorsport. The Australian GP was first held here in 1989, with home rider Wayne Gardner winning the first two races, before it moved to Eastern Creek for six successive years from 1991 to 1996.

Who will add their name to the list of winners this time around? Take a look at Sports.net’s Australian Moto GP betting preview.

Form

A win in Japan after two successive victories in San Marino and Spain would have seen Marc Marquez all but crowned champion for a second successive year, but it wasn’t to be. His second place at Motegi has kept him ahead in the title race and a win will see him take a huge step towards landing another Championship. However, after winning in Australia in 2015, he failed to finish here last year and that could prey on his mind.

Andrea Dovizioso had to produce a massive display in Japan to keep himself in with a chance of winning a first MotoGP title – and he did just that, with a thrilling ride to take the victory. He will need to do something similar in Australia, but could only finish fourth in this race last year. In fact, he has only made the podium once at Phillip Island, and that was back in 2011. It will be a huge ask of him to win this year, but he produced the magic in Japan – can he do it again?

Maverick Vinales is all but out of the title race after a poor showing in Japan. He finished third in Australia last year, but will need to win and hope Marquez and Dovizioso fail to finish to retain any hope of challenging for the title.

Sports.net's View

The race will obviously revolve around what Marc Marquez and Andrea Dovizioso do, but if they concentrate too much on each other, someone like Valentino Rossi could benefit. The Italian legend of motorsport has a great record at Phillip Island and looks of interest this time around at 15/2 at Ladbrokes.

Jorge Lorenzo (8/1) and Cal Crutchlow (28/1) both offer decent odds for an each-way win. Crutchlow won here last year, whilst Lorenzo succeeded in 2013 and has recorded podium finishes since.
