Arsenal travel to Germany on Wednesday night for the first leg of their UEFA Champions League tie against Bayern Munich, desperate to reach the quarter finals for the first time since 2010. They have fallen at this hurdle in six successive seasons and the draw has been no kinder this year, with European giants Bayern presenting a formidable obstacle.

How the Bookies See it:

  • Match Winner: Bayern Munich 1/2,  Draw 7/2, Arsenal 11/2 - Betfred
  • To Qualify: Bayern Munich 1/3, Arsenal 9/4 - BetVictor
  • First Goalscorer: Robert Lewandowski (BAY) 9/4, Arjen Robben (BAY) 5/1, Thomas Muller (BAY) 11/2 - Bet365
  • Correct Score: Bayern Munich 2-1 7/1, Bayern Munich 2-0 15/2, Bayern Munich 1-0 15/2- William Hill

Form

  • Bayern Munich finished as Group D runners-up behind Atletico Madrid and also trailed RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga earlier in the season, but they have recently started to re-establish their domestic dominance. Bayern are unbeaten in nine league games, including five since the winter break, although they needed goals in the 90th and 91st minutes to see off lowly FC Ingolstadt 2-0 at the weekend.
  • Arsenal went through their group campaign unbeaten to finish ahead of Paris Saint-Germain, but they have since endured their customary blip to fall off the pace in the Premier League. A 2-0 victory over Hull City on Saturday got them back to winning ways after losses to Chelsea and Watford, but they are still ten points adrift of leaders Chelsea.
  • Arsenal and Bayern have been pitted together in three of the previous four editions of the Champions League, with the German side just having the edge in previous meetings. They knocked out Arsenal at this stage in 2013 and 2014, while last year’s group matches between the teams both ended in home wins - 5-1 at the Allianz Arena and 2-0 at the Emirates.

Sports.net’s View

Bayern have not quite hit top gear yet this season under Carlo Ancelotti, and even their good recent run has largely been made up of narrow victories. They have not scored more than two goals in any one of their five matches since the German winter break, and there were surprising signs of vulnerability in the group stage that will give Arsenal hope. However, Bayern’s record against the Gunners over the past few years cannot be ignored and Robert Lewandowski looks good value at 29/10 with BetVictor to be the first goalscorer, just as he was in last season’s 5-1 success at the Allianz Arena.

A price of 12/5 on Arsenal to qualify will tempt a lot of punters, considering that for once they will have the advantage of playing at home in the second leg. With fans frustrated that the same mistakes keep on happening, Arsene Wenger is a man under severe pressure, and an encouraging result in Germany is required to keep the boo-boys at bay. As neither side seems to be fully at their best and a tight first leg may be on the cards, it may be worth thinking about William Hill’s odds of 15/4 that there will be no more than one goal in the match. Bayern may just prove too strong in the end, though, running out winners after a cagey start, and there are decent odds of 10/3 at William Hill on Draw/ Bayern Munich in the Half Time/ Full Time market.

  • Sports.net’s top tip: Draw/Bayern Munich in the Half Time/Full Time market - 10/3 at William Hill
