The winner of the 2016 Race to Dubai will be crowned this week as the European Tour season comes to a climax at the DP World Tour Championship. Played on the stunning Earth course at the Jumeirah Golf Estates, there are four players still in contention for the prestigious Harry Vardon Trophy, but will any of them finish first at the DP World Tour Championship?

How the Bookies See it

  • Tournament Winner: Rory McIlroy 3/1, Henrik Stenson 5/1, Alex Noren 14/1 - William Hill
  • Straight Forecast: McIlroy/Stenson 15/1, Stenson/McIlroy 18/1, McIlroy/Noren 43/1 - BetVictor
  • Top 5 Finish: Rory McIlroy 8/11, Henrik Stenson 1, Alex Noren 10/3 - Coral
  • Race to Dubai Winner: Henrik Stenson 1/9, Danny Willett 15/2, Alex Noren 12/1, Rory McIlroy 25/1 - Bet365

Form

  • Henrik Stenson leads the Race to Dubai standings after a stellar 2016, during which he has captured The Open Championship in July and also won the BMW International Open. He has not been quite so dominant in the latter part of the year, but still tied for second at the recent WGC-HSBC Champions in China and came eighth at last week’s Nedbank Golf Challenge.
  • Masters champion Danny Willett is the nearest challenger to Stenson in the Race to Dubai but, apart from placing second at the Italian Open in September, has not set the world alight in the past few months. Sweden’s Alex Noren, third in the Race to Dubai, is in much better form after winning the Nedbank Challenge.
  • McIlroy is the fourth and final player who has a chance of winning the Race to Dubai. As with Stenson, he is a two-time former winner of the DP World Tour Championship, but he has played only one event since September.

Sports.net’s View

As well as being a huge event in its own right, the fact that the DP World Tour Championship marks the end of the Race to Dubai really adds to the sense of anticipation. Only the top 60 players from the European Tour have qualified so it is a top-class line-up, but it is also a smaller field than most tournaments and that plays into the hands of bettors.

Rory McIlroy and Henrik Stenson have both won the event twice and are understandable frontrunners with the bookies, but Alex Noren is perhaps the player who stands out as being the best punt. The 34-year-old Swede fired a brilliant round of 63 to win the Nedbank Challenge in South Africa last week and has been playing exquisite golf consistently for some time now, having risen from 96th to ninth in the world rankings since the end of 2015.

Whereas Stenson knows that he will probably win the Race to Dubai with a solid performance, Noren needs to finish in the top two to have any chance of toppling his compatriot. Even if you are not convinced that he will win the tournament, the odds of Noren finishing in the top five look too good to miss at 10/3 with Coral, ahead of what should be an absorbing end to the season.

  • Sports.net’s top tip: Alex Noren to finish in the top five - 10/3 at Coral
