The semi-finals of the FA Women’s Cup promise to be full of excitement and entertainment, as four of the Super League’s top teams square-off for a place in May’s Wembley final. Chelsea Ladies will be out for revenge as they face Birmingham City Ladies in a repeat of the 2012 Cup final, a game which the London side lost on penalties, while WSL1 champions Manchester City Women entertain Liverpool Ladies in a battle of the north west, as both sides aim to lift the trophy for the first time.

Form

  • Birmingham City Ladies saw off local rivals West Brom in round five, before dispatching defending champions and 14 time FA Cup winners Arsenal in the quarterfinals. The Blues are yet to concede a goal in the competition so far and will be desperate to reach their first final since 2012.
  • Chelsea Ladies haven’t been shy in front of goal in this season’s competition, finding the target 12 times in two games. Their quest to reach a third straight Wembley final started with a 7-0 thrashing of sleeping giants Doncaster Rovers Belles, before cruising to a 5-1 win over Sunderland. Ramona Bachmann and Hannah Blundell grabbed a brace apiece in the last round, form that, if repeated, could make the Blues very difficult to stop.

  • Manchester City Women may be one step away from reaching their first FA Cup final, but the reigning Super League champions have been forced to grind out results on their way to the last four. A narrow 1-0 win over Reading Woman and a 2-1 victory away to recently promoted Bristol City Women may not have been the most glamorous of matches, but they have helped City continue their recent dominance of the women’s game.
  • Liverpool Ladies enjoyed a 2-1 win over neighbours Everton Ladies in the fifth round, before vanquishing the hopes of 2015 runners-up Notts County in the last eight. The Reds, whose last last semi-final appearance in 2013 ended in defeat to Arsenal, will be aiming to reach their first final since 1996.

Sports.net’s View

Birmingham City pulled off what was arguably the result of the tournament so far, as they knocked holders Arsenal out in the last round. It is this determination and willingness to win that could see them reach the final for just the second time in their history. However, 2015 winners Chelsea aren’t a team to go down without a fight, having battled hard to secure Champions League football for the 2017/18 campaign. Despite cantering to victory in their cup matches this year, the London club might find things a little more difficult in Monday’s game, but should ultimately see off their WSL1 counterparts in what could be an end-to-end encounter.

  • Sports.net’s top tip: Chelsea Ladies to win

Manchester City swept all before them in last season’s WSL1, as they finished the season unbeaten. With the champions due to kick off their Spring Series in the next month, and a Champions League double header with Lyon to come, Nick Cushing’s girls will be determined to maintain their winning run and reach May’s Wembley showpiece. North west rivals Liverpool stand in their way. The Reds were the only side to avoid defeat against the City juggernaut last season and could cause further problems in this game if they can remain defensively sound. This promises to be another close call, but the team in sky blue should have just about enough to edge out their opponents, especially if on-loan star Carli Lloyd and super striker Toni Duggan hit top form.
