The Formula E season will come to a thrilling climax in London this weekend and the Drivers’ Championship could not be more tantalisingly poised, with Lucas di Grassi holding a slender one-point lead over Sebastien Buemi after eight races. The final two ePrix will be staged at Battersea Park on Saturday and Sunday, and the bookies are unsure which man will come through to claim the glory.

How the Bookies see it

  • London ePrix Winner: Buemi 5/4, Di Grassi 7/4, Sam Bird 8/1, Jean-Eric Vergne 12/1 - Ladbrokes
  • Drivers’ Championship Winner: Buemi 8/11, Di Grassi Evens, Bird 500/1 - Sky Bet

Form

  • Di Grassi and Buemi have very similar records over the course of the season. Both drivers have won three races, with Buemi finishing first in the most recent ePrix in Berlin. Di Grassi has accumulated 141 points to Buemi’s 140, leaving Great Britain’s Bird a long way adrift in third place on 82 points.
  • Bird and fourth-placed Jerome d’Ambrosio are the only other two drivers to have won races this season, in Argentina and Mexico respectively.
  • Nelson Piquet Jr won the Drivers’ Championship in 2014-15 but is currently down in 16th position. Buemi and Bird won the two races in London at the end of last season.

Sports.net’s view

Bird may have a mathematical chance of winning the Drivers’ Championship but realistically it is a two-horse race and there is little to separate them. Di Grassi has expressed concerns that Fanboost - Formula E’s unique voting system which allows the most popular drivers to receive extra power - could play a part, but Buemi does not believe it will be a significant factor.

The momentum would appear to be with Buemi, who won the most recent event in Berlin and took victory in one of the two races in London last year. Having narrowly missed out on the title last year, he will be determined not to let that happen again and is a good bet to not only win the title but also the London ePrix itself at odds of 5/4 with Ladbrokes.

It is sure to be a pulsating couple of days in London and Bird has whetted the appetite of new fans by promising that there will be ‘more overtaking and racing in one Formula E than in a whole season of Formula One’. Once the overtaking is done, though, Buemi could just be the man left standing at the top of the podium with the trophy in his hands.

  • Sports.net’s top tip: Sebastien Buemi to win the London ePrix - 5/4 at Ladbrokes
