Formula E heads to the vibrant Mexico City this weekend for the fourth round of the 2016/17 season. It is quite literally the championship highpoint as this ePrix venue sits 2,200m above sea level. It is the series’ second visit to Mexico City and the passionate, but partisan, fans will hope to cheer local hero Esteban Gutierrez to victory. The former F1 driver is entering the Formula E fray with team Techeetah, replacing Chinese driver Ma Qing Hua.

How the Bookies see it

  • Championship winner: Sebastien Buemi 1/10, Lucas di Grassi 11/1, Jean-Eric Vergne 12/1 – Sky Bet
  • Mexico ePrix winner: Sebastien Buemi 5/4, Jean-Eric Vergn 9/2, Lucas di Grassi 13/2 - Sky Bet

Form

Sebastien Buemi arrives on the back of a record-breaking three victories in a row including a dominant win last time out in Buenos Aires. The Renault e.dams driver has a healthy 29-point lead, but will still be keen to get on the top step of the podium and cross another venue off his list of race wins, having finished second here in 2016.

Lucas di Grassi may lie second in the driver standings, but it is not yet the championship campaign he was hoping for. Still, he may consider himself lucky not to be further down the table after his Abt Schaeffler Audi Sport team was placed under investigation for an unsafe release in Argentina. The Brazilian driver has a bit of a score to settle in Mexico City after last year’s on track win was taken away when his car was excluded having failed a scrutineering weight check.

Nico Prost is still rather in the shade of his dominant Renault e.dams teammate, but his steady run of three fourth-place finishes sees him lying third in the championship. The young Frenchman must be hoping that Buemi will be suffering from jet lag from a transatlantic flight the Swiss will make on the morning of the race and that it will be his turn to shine, as he did at the end of the last season.

Jean-Eric Vergne and the Techeetah team are definitely quick. If it wasn’t for a DNF in Hong Kong, he would have been further up the championship standings. Expect him to be in the mix once again this weekend.

Sports.net’s view

It will take a brave person to bet against Buemi taking a fourth win. However, there is a chance he won’t even make it to Mexico as, along with Lopez and Sarrazin, the championship leader will fly in from Italy on race-day morning, after attending the Toyota LMP1 team World Endurance Championship launch.

His run of wins must end somewhere and this could be the deciding factor in giving another driver the chance to take a first victory of the season.

The most likely candidate is surely the 2015/2016 runner up, Di Grassi. Although Vergne and Prost may have something to say about that. They or even the quick, but desperately unlucky Sam Bird will all be hoping to topple Buemi from his pedestal this weekend.

  • Sports.net's Top Tip: Lucas Di Grassi to win 13/2 - Sky Bet

Please note, odds may fluctuate in the lead up to the race.
