England may be wishing they could make an early escape from India after a crushing loss in the fourth Test condemned them to a series defeat, but they must first try to salvage a modicum of pride in the fifth and final match. While a victory in Chennai would not disguise the fact that the tourists have been comprehensively outplayed, an improved display would at least show England’s resilience and restore some confidence for future challenges.

How the Bookies See it:

  • Match Winner: India 1/2, Draw 3/1, England 5/1 - Sky Bet
  • Top England Batsman: Joe Root 11/4, Alastair Cook 7/2, Keaton Jennings 9/2 - Coral
  • Top England Bowler: Adil Rashid 5/2, Moeen Ali 7/2, Stuart Broad 5/1 - William Hill
  • Top India Batsman: Virat Kohli 7/4, Cheteshwar Pujara 3/1, Murali Vijay 9/2 - Betfred
  • Top India Bowler: Ravichandran Ashwin 11/10, Ravindra Jadeja 3/1, Jayant Yadav 6/1 - Ladbrokes

Form

  • India hammered England by an innings and 36 runs in the fourth Test in Mumbai to go 3-0 in front and clinch the series. While several players had impressive games, the standout performance again belonged to Virat Kohli, who has now scored 640 runs in the series at an average of 128 following his career best of 235. Ravichandran Ashwin also moved to the top of the series bowling charts with 27 wickets after registering match figures of 12 for 167 in Mumbai.
  • England’s third defeat on the spin in Mumbai left them on the verge of an unwanted record for Test losses in a year, having now been beaten in seven matches in 2016. A few individuals are still set to leave India with their reputations enhanced, though, and Keaton Jennings was the latest newcomer to shine as he made a century on debut at the Wankhede Stadium.

Sports.net’s View

The gulf between the teams appears to have been growing wider by the match, and pressure is building on Alastair Cook as questions persist over how long he will remain as captain. Cook has not had the greatest series with the bat and will be desperate to lead his team to a consolation victory, but the momentum is with India and it is hard to see England taking 20 wickets if the pitch is anything like the previous four.

Cook may be worth a shot at 7/2 to be England’s top batsman, but Joe Root is an understandable favourite and he will want to take this final chance to show that he is in the same class as Virat Kohli. The match-up between two of the best players in world cricket was the source of considerable hype before the series and so far Kohli has upstaged his English rival, although Root’s dazzling 77 in a losing cause in Mumbai hinted at a man with unfinished business.

There is no danger of India’s captain taking his foot off the gas in Chennai, so Sky Bet’s odds on Kohli and Root to be their team’s respective top scorers in the first innings look very appealing at 11/1.

  • Sports.net’s top tip: Virat Kohli Most India Runs 1st Inns & Joe Root Most England Runs 1st Inns - 11/1 at Sky Bet
