The seventeenth and penultimate race of the 2017 MotoGP championship takes place in Malaysia, with Marc Marquez on the brink of retaining his world title. The Shell Malaysia Motorcycle Grand Prix will be held on Sunday 29th October at the Sepang International Circuit, close to Kuala Lumpur.

The first Malaysian GP was held at the Shah Alam circuit in 1991 and the event remained here for seven years before moving to Johor for a single year in 1998. By 1999, the stunning Sepang International Circuit, which was designed by Hermann Tilke, hosted its first Grand Prix and has been a consistent fixture on the MotoGP calendar ever since. The circuit has also been used extensively for MotoGP preseason testing over the years.

Form

Three wins, including an epic victory in Australia last week, and a second place in his last four MotoGP races has seen Marc Marquez take a firm grip of the battle to win the world title once again. With a 33-point lead, the Spaniard just needs a top seven finish to secure the championship, so might take things a little more casually. He last won at this track in 2014 and failed to podium the previous two years.

All the pressure is on Italian Andrea Dovizioso to win in Malaysia to maintain any chance of taking the title race to the final contest of the season, having finished a disappointing 13th last time out. In his favour, Dovizioso won here last year, so knows how to do it. He must go all out, so we expect a big race from him.

Despite a disappointing ride in Australia, Jorge Lorenzo could play a big part in how the Malaysia GP unfolds. Lorenzo has made the podium here every year since 2012 and will be looking to help his Ducati team mate, Dovizioso, any way he can. It is definitely worth watching his race.

Sports.net's View

With Marc Marquez not needing to win, he might just do enough to secure the title, so his short odds are far from appealing. Dovizioso is better priced, and he does need the victory and for Marquez to fail, but will he be able to handle the pressure? Jorge Lorenzo at looks far more interesting, given his outsider status, the fact he knows the track well and has been successful. Lorenzo is worth at least an each-way bet.

Johan Zarco raced well in Australia and will bring excellent each-way value for a top-three finish. Andrea Iannone is also an outsider who could come good.
