Race six of the MotoGP Championship heads to Autodromo del Mugello in Italy for the Gran Premio d’Italia Oakley on the 4th June. The stunning circuit is surrounded by the beautiful tree-lined valleys of Tuscany, and its natural undulations have made this a favourite of fans and riders from around the world. Purchased by Ferrari back in 1988, the circuit was renovated to a high standard, with excellent safety features and facilities added. The venue for the Italian MotoGP has been a firm fixture on the calendar since 1991.

How the Bookies See it

  • Winner: Vinales 2/1, Marquez 4/1, Rossi 5/2, Pedrosa 9/1 – Sky Bet

Form

Having won the opening two races of the campaign, Maverick Vinales was back on top of the podium in France with a convincing win for his Movistar Yamaha MotoGP team. This has allowed him to open up a 17-point lead in the overall standings, but he has struggled at this track in recent years, only finishing seventh in 2015 and sixth in 2016.

After a somewhat slow start to his campaign, Dani Pedrosa’s recent form has seen him move up to second in the title race. He first reached the podium with a third place finish in America in Race 3, before winning Race 4 in Spain and then recording another third position in France last time out. He now races at a circuit where he has finished fourth for the last three years, but he did win here back in 2010.

Italian MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi has dropped down to third in the standings after failing to finish in France two weeks ago. He had been a major doubt for this race after a motocross training accident, but has since passed a medical and been declared fit to ride. However, with injury concerns still hanging over him, his chances of winning in front of a home crowd look remote.

Sports.net's View

Despite his poor record at Mugello, it’s hard to dismiss Maverick Vinales after winning three of the five races this season. A big race is also expected from the in-form Dani Pedrosa, who looks to be a good price at 9/1 at Bet365 to snatch the win on this happy hunting ground.

Spaniard Jorge Lorenzo might be sitting down in ninth-place in the standings after just one podium finish this season, but his record in the Gran Premio d’Italia Oakley is incredible. Since 2009 he has raced here every year and never finished outside of the top two positions. This included wins between 2011-2013, and then again in each of the last two years. At a price of 14/1 at Sky Bet he is a great each-way bet.

  • Sports.net’s Top Tip: Lorenzo to win the Italian MotoGP at 14/1 with Sky Bet (bet each way)
