The MotoGP Championship arrives in the Netherlands this weekend, as the TT Assen Circuit stages race eight of the season, on Sunday 25th June. Known as The Cathedral of motorcycle racing, Assen proudly boasts of being the only venue to have hosted uninterrupted rounds of the Motorcycle World Championship every year since its inception in 1949. The Dutch TT, held each June, is one of the biggest annual sporting occasions in the Netherlands and draws thousands of fans from across Europe.

How the Bookies See it

  • Winner: Marquez 5/2, Vinales 3/1, Rossi 3/1, Dovizioso 5/1 – Bet365

Form

A win at Le Mans, followed with a second-place finish in Italy, saw Maverick Vinales start to open up a decent lead at the top of the world standings, but a disappointing tenth in Barcelona has seen that gap disappear. In his two attempts at this track in recent years, he has failed to get anywhere near a podium finish, so it’s hard to back him this time, given his past form.

Impressive back-to-back wins in Italy and Spain have seen Andrea Dovizioso emerge as a real threat in the title race. Having placed second in the campaign’s opening race in Qatar, the Italian then failed to record a podium finish until race six, when he won on home soil. He followed that up with another victory in Barcelona, and Dovizioso will hope for a further victory in the Netherlands, where he topped the podium last year.

Marc Marquez goes into the Dutch GP as favourite, despite winning just one race this season. Some decent podium finishes and consistent placings have kept him in the title hunt back in third, but he needs to start winning races if he wants to retain his World Championship crown. Marquez’s last win in the Netherlands was back in 2014 so, at such short odds, he has little appeal for punters, despite his obvious talent.

Sports.net's View

Andrea Dovizioso arrives in top form and can have the rest of the pack behind him again on a track at which he has already won. Before last year’s success, he had also recorded podium finishes at the TT Assen in 2011, 2012 and 2014. This is a track he obviously enjoys so, at very good odds of 6/1 with Paddy Power, he’s definitely worth backing to win, or you could play safe and stake on him each-way.

Danilo Petrucci recorded a third-place finish two races back in Italy, his best result of the season so far. He can get back on the podium at TT Assen, where he finished second last year and, at a hugely generous 40/1 from Paddy Power, is well worth an each-way bet.

  • Sports.net's Top Tip: Petrucci to win at 40/1 with Paddy Power (bet each way).
