NFL 2017-18 Week 8 Betting Preview

The NFL won’t be the same without Aaron Rodgers, but season-ending injuries to the Green Bay Packers quarterback and other stars, such as Odell Beckham Jr., prove how losing one player can alter the outlook on a team’s entire season. In other NFL news, another game was played in London on Sunday, though games played in the UK have tended to be blowouts this season. The lowly Bears toppled the Panthers, the Saints beat the Rodgers-less Packers at Lambeau, and the Jaguars actually broke .500 with their blowout victory over the Colts. As confusing as these results are, there are some Week 8 games that should be a little more straightforward to call.

The Saints won their fourth straight in Week 7, taking down a tough Packers team on the road 26-17. Drew Brees hasn’t fallen off one bit, and Michael Thomas is still almost uncoverable for opposing defences. Mark Ingram has improved his play over the last two weeks, scoring in both.  Alvin Kamara has also been a revelation following the departure of Adrian Peterson, providing New Orleans with a change-of-pace back who can catch passes and attack the outside of the defense. The Saints’ defence is still suspect, but the Bears’ offence is one of the worst in the league right now.

The Bears surprisingly took down the Carolina Panthers at home in Week 7 by a score of 17-3. That victory brought their record to 3-4, which is much better than most expected them to have right now. Chicago’s defence was the real MVP this week, keeping the Panthers out of the end zone and constantly pressuring Cam Newton. Mitch Trubisky looked composed in the pocket, though he completed just four passes in the win. Jordan Howard is arguably the most underrated back in the NFL, and he’ll be a key piece for Chicago moving forward.

The Bears have overachieved this season, but they’ve struggled to produce on the road. The Saints usually dominate at home, and their offence is just starting to hit its stride, so they should have too much for the Bears this week.

The Bills continue to shock the NFL world as they move to 4-2 and into contention in the AFC East. They may not surpass the Patriots, but they’ve performed much better than most expected thus far. In Week 7, they narrowly defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 30-27 thanks to a late field goal. LeSean McCoy finally found the end zone for the first time this season, and then scored again late in the game. Shady’s production could very well decide many of Buffalo’s games this year. Tyrod Taylor’s play hasn’t turned heads, but he’s limited his mistakes and made some pinpoint throws when he needs to. Buffalo’s defence may not be as dominant as it has been in previous years, but they can get the job done against most opponents.

The Raiders won an incredibly important game against the Chiefs on Thursday in Week 7. They didn’t register a single fumble or interception in their win, which moved them to 3-4. Amari Cooper finally had a breakout game, finishing with over 200 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Derrick Carr’s return made all the difference for his team as he drove down the field and threw a game-winning touchdown to Michael Crabtree with zeros on the clock. Their defence will have to improve if they want to make the playoffs, but they appear to be turning the corner at this point in the season.

The Bills have been impressive this season, but they haven’t faced anyone like the Raiders yet.  Though Marshawn Lynch won’t be able to play, Derrick Carr should have his way with Buffalo’s secondary.  Expect this game to be close and low-scoring, but Carr and Cooper should lead the way to an Oakland victory in Buffalo.
