Premier League Betting Preview: Watford v Manchester United

Manchester United must be keen to put the disappointment of last Saturday’s derby day defeat behind them, but a trip to Vicarage Road to face a Watford side fresh from their first win of the season might not be the easiest of games. Jose Mourinho will know that his team can’t afford many more slip-ups as they look to keep pace with rivals and title favourites Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.

How the Bookies See it

  • Winner: Manchester United 3/5, Draw 3/1, Watford 9/2 - Sky Bet
  • First Goalscorer: Zlatan Ibrahimovic 3/1, Wayne Rooney 5/1, Marcus Rashford 11/2 - Paddy Power
  • Correct Score: Manchester United 1-0 13/2, Manchester United 2-0 7/1, Draw 1-1 15/2 - BetVictor

Form

  • Watford were handed a tough start in their second season back in the Premier League. The Hornets picked up just a solitary point from their opening three games, but did manage to find the net once in each game. A stunning come-from-behind win away at West Ham finally gave Walter Mazzarri his first victory in English football and lifted his side into the top half of the table.
  • Manchester United looked comfortable in their opening two games, but struggled to break down Hull City at the KCOM Stadium, relying on a last-gasp goal from Marcus Rashford to maintain their 100-percent start. Arch-rivals Manchester City ended the Red Devils’ unbeaten run and inflicted a rare home defeat on Jose Mourinho in a game where United looked second-best throughout.

Sports.net’s view

Watford were amongst those tipped for relegation at the start of the season, but if they are able to produce the kind of display they did against West Ham, the haunting draft that emanates from the Premier League trapdoor shouldn’t bother them too much. The Hornets hit four goals at the London Stadium and have netted at least once in their previous three matches, including goals against Arsenal and Chelsea. Bet365 are offering odds of 4/6 that Watford will prevent Manchester United from keeping a clean sheet, while a win for the home side and both teams to score looks tempting at 11/1.

The Hornet’s biggest threat in front of goal comes from the strike force of Odion Ighalo and captain Troy Deeney. The duo notched 28 of Watford’s 40 goals last season, and both strikers are already off the mark in this campaign. Both men are 9/1 with William Hill to break the deadlock in this game, while Sky Bet are offering odds of 3/1 on a goal at any time. Current fantasy football favourite Etienne Capoue could also be worth keeping an eye on, as the former Spurs midfielder looks to add to his impressive three-goal haul this term.

Manchester United enter this game as favourites and should be well-rested given manager Jose Mourinho’s decision to leave a number of first team stars at home for their Europa League defeat at Feyenoord on Thursday night. Expect Zlatan Ibrahimovic to carve out a number of chances, while Wayne Rooney could also feature heavily, despite recent calls for United’s captain to be dropped from the starting XI. England’s striker-turned-midfielder is 19/10 with William Hill to hit the target anytime and inspire his team to the win, while his Swedish teammate is a shorter 7/5 to score anytime and produce the same outcome.

The Red Devils are able to boast a mightily impressive record against Watford, winning every meeting with the Hornets since 1987. The same fixture last season produced a 2-1 victory for the Manchester side and punters can get odds of 8/1 on the same result happening this time around. However, for those who think this will be a much more lively affair, why not bet on the game to feature more than 4.5 goals - 6/1 with BetVictor.

  • Sports.net’s top tip: Etienne Capoue to score anytime - 14/1 with BetVictor
