Rugby league’s annual get-together, the Magic Weekend, returns for 2016 with all twelve Super League teams making an appearance at Newcastle’s St James’ Park over the course of two days. This festival of rugby brings together supporters from each of the clubs involved for a fun weekend of music, fancy dress and top-notch action on the field of play with an atmosphere that few other sporting events can match.

How the Bookies See it

  • Warrington v Castleford: Warrington 4/9, Castleford 15/8 - Bet365
  • Leeds v Wigan: Leeds 2/1, Wigan 2/5 - Sky Bet
  • Hull FC v Hull KR: Hull FC 3/10, Hull KR 5/2 - Paddy Power

Form

Leeds vs. Wigan: Leeds Rhinos have been beaten in each of their last eight games and sit bottom of Super League coming into the Magic Weekend. Wigan Warriors hold fifth spot at the moment and haven’t won in three, but they destroyed this weekend’s opponents 28-6 when the sides last met in March.

Warrington vs. Castleford: Warrington Wolves top Super League, but have lost two of their last five games, including an embarrassing defeat to strugglers Huddersfield Giants in which Wolves failed to score. Castleford Tigers come into the fixture on the back of two big wins, although they were well beaten by Warrington in March.

Hull FC vs. Hull KR: Hull FC are on stunning form, with nine wins in a row under their belt ahead of the clash with their city rivals. The Black and Whites are third in the table, level on points with leaders Warrington. Hull KR’s form is erratic, but a strong win over Widnes last time out will give them hope in Newcastle.

Sports.net’s view

Form can go out of the window at the Magic Weekend, with the atmosphere, strange surroundings and media scrutiny removing players from their comfort zones. If ever there was a chance for Leeds Rhinos to notch up a much-needed win during this abject season, this could be it. Wigan Warriors, the side they beat in last season’s Grand Final to clinch the treble, are not exactly on scintillating form, so the West Yorkshire side are worth backing at 21/10 with 888Sport.

Similarly, a Hull derby very rarely goes as expected, with the Robins leading Hull FC 20-0 at the hour mark, only to eventually lose 20-22 when the sides met at the KC Lightstream Stadium two months ago. This will be a lot closer than the Super League standings and recent results suggest and whilst KR might not have quite enough to win, backing them in the handicaps market could prove fruitful.

  • Sports.net’s top tip: Hull KR to win with a +4 handicap - 13/8 at Totesport
