UEFA Champions League Betting Tips: Manchester City v Barcelona

Tuesday night will see Manchester City welcome five-time European champions Barcelona to the Etihad Stadium. The two sides met less than a fortnight ago, in a game that will not be remembered fondly by Pep Guardiola’s side as the Spanish giants dismantled City 4-0 in front of a baying Camp Nou crowd. The Citizens will now be out for revenge as they seek to make up ground on the Catalan club at the summit of Group C and edge themselves closer to the promised land of the round of 16.

How the Bookies See it

  • Winner: Barcelona 13/10, Man City 9/5, Draw 11/4 - William Hill
  • Half Time/Full Time: Barcelona/Barcelona 13/5, Man City/Man City 10/3, Draw/Draw 11/2 - Bet365
  • Correct Score: Draw 1-1 15/2, Barcelona 2-1 9/1, Man City 2-1 21/2 - BetVictor

Form

  • Manchester City started their sixth straight season in the Champions League with a comprehensive 4-0 win over Group C rivals Borussia Monchengladbach. However, City soon lost momentum as they were forced to come from behind three times in order to salvage a draw with Celtic, before slumping to a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Barcelona. Domestically, the Etihad side remain amongst the early title chasing pack, but a run of disappointing results has certainly left Guardiola scratching his head.
  • Barcelona are sitting pretty at the top of Group C and are one of only three teams in this year’s tournament with a 100 percent record. The Catalans started their quest for a sixth European Cup in style, annihilating Celtic 7-0, before overcoming a very stubborn Borussia Monchengladbach side. The current La Liga champions then showed no mercy as they dispatched Manchester City in what was less than a happy homecoming for former Barca boss Guardiola. On home soil, Barcelona have picked up after an early season wobble, but already find themselves behind bitter rivals Real Madrid.

Sports.net’s view

Manchester City’s defeat two weeks ago was not only their biggest loss to Barcelona in five meetings, but also their biggest loss on the continent since debuting in the competition in 2011. Pep’s men seemed to be matching their Catalan counterparts blow for blow until a moment of insanity from former Camp Nou stopper Claudio Bravo. The keeper’s dismissal for handling outside the box was the beginning of the end for City, who suffered a catastrophic capitulation in the second half. Despite being without Bravo for the return fixture, City are able to call upon a safe pair of hands in reserve goalkeeper Willy Caballero. The 35-year-old is 4/1 to keep a clean sheet, while a City win to nil is priced at 11/2, both with Bet365. For those feeling a little less optimistic about the defensive capabilities of the Citizens, a home win and both teams to score could be a sound bet at 15/4, again with Bet365.

Since suffering an early season stumble in the league, Barcelona have looked unstoppable, seemingly scoring goals at will. The partnership of Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez is enough to give even the best defenders nightmares as three of the world’s best footballers bear down on goal. The South American trio have already notched over 25 goals between them this season and will certainly be hungry for more in midweek. An away win by three or more goals is priced at 9/1 with Sky Bet, while Boylesport have a winning margin of four or more goals available at 25/1. However, maybe don’t expect a repeat performance of the last meeting between these two teams, with a slightly closer scoreline the more likely outcome.

  • Sports.net’s top tip: Barcelona to win 2-0 - 15/1 with BetVictor
