Tottenham Hotspur will bid to boost their chances of progressing from a competitive UEFA Champions League Group E when they entertain Bayer Leverkusen next Wednesday.  Spurs are currently second in the pool, just one point ahead of their German opponents, and the latest fixture at their temporary Wembley home is set to be another stern test of their European credentials.

How the Bookies See it

  • Match Winner: Tottenham Evens, Draw 5/2, Bayer Leverkusen 13/5 - William Hill
  • Correct Score: Draw 1-1 6/1, Tottenham 1-0 15/2, Tottenham 2-1 8/1, Tottenham 2-0 19/2 - BetVictor
  • Half Time/Full Time - Tottenham/Tottenham 23/10, Draw/Tottenham 4/1, Draw/Draw 9/2 - Coral
  • Group E Winner: Tottenham 6/5, Monaco 11/8, Bayer Leverkusen 4/1, CSKA Moscow 18/1 - Sky Bet

Form

  • Leverkusen and Tottenham played out a goalless draw when they met at the BayArena in the third round of group games earlier in October. Spurs had their goalkeeper Hugo Lloris to thank for the hard-earned point after he produced a series of excellent saves.
  • Spurs started their Champions League campaign with a 2-1 loss at home to Monaco, before bouncing back to win 1-0 away to CSKA Moscow and then hold Leverkusen. They have made a strong start to the Premier League season and look like potential title challengers, although an EFL Cup defeat by Liverpool made it four matches without a win in all competitions.
  • Leverkusen have drawn all three of their Group E games so far, having let a 2-0 lead slip against CSKA Moscow, conceded an injury-time equaliser away to Monaco and then had just a point to show for their dominance at home to Spurs. It has also been a frustrating season domestically, as back-to-back Bundesliga defeats have left them in the bottom half of the table and they were also knocked out of the German Cup on penalties by third-tier team Sportfreunde Lotte.

Sports.net’s View

Leverkusen’s record of three points from as many Champions League games, together with their lowly position in the Bundesliga, would suggest that Tottenham should prove too good at Wembley and take all three points. However, Spurs will be wary of a talented team which includes livewire striker Javier Hernandez and will certainly not take Leverkusen lightly after a lucky escape in Germany.

Tottenham also struggled in their first match at Wembley, going down down to Monaco, so a tight match can probably be expected. While Spurs look a stronger side, their success has been built on a solid defence and Harry Kane’s injury-enforced absence has left the onus on others in front of goal.

A price of evens on the number of goals totalling under 2.5 looks a shrewd punt, if not ever so inviting. You could find a better return by backing Tottenham to nick the game 1-0 at odds of 15/2 with BetVictor, but the best balance between risk and reward might be to go for Spurs to win to nil at 11/4 with Bet365, in what should be an absorbing encounter.

  • Sports.net’s top tip: Tottenham to win to nil - 11/4 at Bet365
