With big boys Newcastle and perennial promotion-chasers Brighton having ascended to the top table of English football, the race to follow in their footsteps looks incredibly tight. At 7/1, Aston Villa are the bookies’ favourites and could well challenge, especially with Steve Bruce at the helm. The managerial journeyman has achieved promotion to the promised land more than any other manager and, with John Terry adding experience to a youthful backline, Villa could be the ones to beat.

However, rarely does a Championship promotion race go so smoothly. The Villains will certainly face competition from last season’s play-off chasing posse, with Fulham (9/1 at Betfred) and Sheffield Wednesday (10/1 at William Hill) likely to push all the way, while Middlesbrough definitely look capable of bouncing straight back under the tutelage of former Swansea and Leeds boss Garry Monk.

Of course, it’s always worth looking out for that one team that could upset the odds and secure a surprise position in the Premier League. Naturally, Norwich and Derby have always been ones for flirting with the top six, while Wolves (13/1 at Paddy Power) could provide this season’s shock.

The Championship is not an easy division to escape from and many teams who have descended from the Premier League have found the going more than a little tricky. With this in mind, it will be interesting to see how Sunderland fare in their first campaign outside the top flight since 2007. The Black Cats are 20/1 with BetVictor to make it back-to-back drops, but can new boss Simon Grayson and his rabble of underachieving stars save the Mackems from the indignity of League One?

Unsurprisingly, last season's promoted duo of Bolton and Millwall are amongst the frontrunners to return to where they came from, while it would be considered a miracle if Burton Albion (17/10 at Paddy Power) avoid the trap door for a second successive term. However, having spent little money, could time be called on Ipswich Town’s 16-year stay in the second tier? The Tractor Boys are 10/3 with Bet365 to chug their way down the divisions.

After snubbing Premier League side Burnley in favour of a lucrative move to Middlesbrough, Britt Assombalonga is the bookies’ favourite to top the scoring charts this season. At 9/1, the former Nottingham Forest man is well priced and could help boost the Riverside team’s chances of escaping from the Championship at the first time of asking. The 24-year-old is highly tipped alongside Leeds United’s Kiwi cracker Chris Wood (10/1 at Betfred) and Aston Villa’s Jonathan Kodjia (9/1 at Sky Bet), the latter of whom will be hoping to power Villa towards the title.
