The 69th Emmy Awards ceremony will take place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday 18 September. This annual awards ceremony began way back in January 1949 to recognise outstanding television shows produced in the Los Angeles area, but today it is a much larger event which covers the whole of the American television industry. The nominations for this year’s awards were announced in July, so who do the bookmakers expect to be the big winners?

The Contenders

  • Veep, starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, is the hot favourite to win the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series, and with American politics making far more headlines than usual over the last year or so, the political satire, which is now heading towards its seventh season, has enjoyed consistently high ratings. Rap-themed comedy Atlanta is a worthy second favourite.
  • The Crown and This Is Us are level-pegging for Outstanding Drama Series at the time of writing. The Crown, starring Claire Foy and Matt Smith, tells the story of Queen Elizabeth II from 1947 to 1955, whilst This Is Us is an ensemble show which compares and contrasts the lives of multiple characters who have the same birthday.
  • Big Little Lies, which stars Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman and Shailene Woodley, is based on the novel of the same name. It tells the story of three women and explores the idea of seemingly perfect relationships often being quite different behind closed doors. Feud: Bette and Joan stars Susan Sarandon and Jessica Lange as Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, and dramatises their behind-the-scenes feud on the set of the movie Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?.
  • The favourites for Outstanding Lead Actor and Actress markets are Sterling K. Brown for This Is Us, Elisabeth Moss for The Handmaid’s Tale, Donald Glover for Atlanta, Julia Louis-Dreyfus for Veep, Robert De Niro for The Wizard of Lies and Nicole Kidman for Big Little Lies.

Sports.net’s View

A television show doesn’t get nominated for an Emmy Award for being anything less than top quality, so all of the nominees would be worthy of winning their respective categories. That said, it would still be a big surprise if the short-priced favourites don’t live up to the expectations of the oddsmakers.

We expect Veep to win the award for Outstanding Comedy Series, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus to win Outstanding Lead Actress for her role in the show. Similarly, Big Little Lies and Nicole Kidman look very likely winners of the awards for Outstanding Limited Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in that category.

We will side with Big Little Lies to win the Outstanding Limited Series award, and keep an interested eye on all of the other worthy contenders in the other categories.
