The 2017 Italian Grand Prix will take place at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza this Sunday 3 September, and with Sebastian Vettel currently just seven points clear in the Drivers’ Championship table, both he and Lewis Hamilton will be keener than ever to get the maximum number of points from the race. Hamilton achieved his fifth win of the season last Sunday in the Belgian Grand Prix to close the Championship gap on Vettel, but how likely is he to follow up with another win in Italy this weekend?

Form

  • Lewis Hamilton’s success in the Belgian Grand Prix helped him to reduce the gap between himself and Vettel to just seven points in the Drivers’ Championship table, but the Brit won’t be completely satisfied until he has overtaken his German rival. Hamilton started on pole in the Belgian race, and he remained in front for the duration of the event, but Vettel was always just a second or two behind him, and the Brit was well aware that any mistake would have been very likely to cost him the lead. As it was, he managed to fend off Vettel’s advances with some elegance, and will now go to Italy knowing that a win there is certain to put him at the head of the table for the Championship.
  • Sebastian Vettel was in second place when he started last Sunday’s Grand Prix in Belgium, and he did a superb job of putting pressure on Hamilton throughout the race. His car had better pace than Hamilton’s on the day, but there were no real opportunities for him to get the better of the Mercedes, and so he had to settle for 18 points for finishing 2.38 seconds behind the Brit. Vettel’s lead for the Drivers’ Championship is now dangerously slim, and the German will be just as keen to extend it this weekend as Hamilton will be to obliterate it completely.
  • Valtteri Bottas started the Belgian Grand Prix in third place on the grid, and for a long while the Mercedes driver looked set to add another podium finish to his record for the season. Unfortunately, that situation changed when Bottas went off the track late in the race, and he ended up finishing in fifth place. That added ten points to his tally for the season, and puts him in third place for the Drivers’ Championship, with a total of 179 points.

Sports.net’s View

Winning the Belgian Grand Prix was a good way for Hamilton to celebrate the 200th pole start of his career (which equals Michael Schumacher's record), and if the Brit secures pole again for the Italian Grand Prix we would certainly expect him to win it. Vettel won’t make it easy, however, and if the German starts in front we can be confident that he will want to stay there and extend his narrow lead at the top of the table.

There are always potential surprises in store for Formula 1 racing bettors, but given the current form of the drivers, we will side with Hamilton to win the Italian Grand Prix and overtake his German rival for the Championship.
