Films with most nominations

  • The Shape of Water - Nominated in 12 categories, The Shape of Water is a genre-blurring mash-up from the mind of Guillermo del Toro which has been described by some critics as a masterpiece. Telling the story of a mute cleaning woman who falls in love with a weird water-dwelling alien, it is part romance, part sci-fi, part thriller and part fish fetish erotica!
  • Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - A powerful, yet darkly comic, film about a community torn apart by the unsolved murder of a teenage girl, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri has already been named best drama of the year at the Golden Globes. The acting has received particular acclaim, most notably Frances McDormand’s performance as the grieving mother at the heart of the story.
  • Darkest Hour - A British war film featuring a tour de force from Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill, Darkest Hour takes viewers back to the early days of World War II as Adolf Hitler’s Nazis start to gain control of Europe.
  • Blade Runner 2049 - A visually stunning sequel to the 1982 original, Blade Runner 2049 stars Hollywood heartthrobs past and present in Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling, and has mostly been nominated for technical awards.
  • Dunkirk - Christopher Nolan’s ambitious World War II epic shows the famous beach evacuation from three different standpoints - air, land and sea - and relies on an ensemble cast and sweeping score to create an emotional and atmospheric classic.

Sports.net’s View

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri has perhaps generated most of the buzz of the awards season so far following its success at the Golden Globes and is an understandable favourite with bookmakers. However, at a British ceremony it seems a good idea to consider either Darkest Hour or Dunkirk, which are home-grown films set around major historical events. Odds of 10/1 on Darkest Hour look particularly attractive, with Gary Oldman’s spine-tingling performance as Churchill giving it a real chance to be named best film.

Oldman looks very likely to win best actor and Frances McDormand’s brilliantly understated portrayal in Three Billboards should net her the best actress gong, although Saoirse Ronan, Sally Hawkins and Margot Robbie are all strong contenders. Among the other categories, All The Money In The World star Christopher Plummer could be worth a punt at 6/1 with Betfred to be named best supporting actor. There are two actors from Three Billboards - Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson - in this category so the votes between them could be split, while one of the other nominated roles is for Hugh Grant in Paddington 2 and that performance may not quite have had the depth to win over voters.
