Leicester City have endured a shaky start to the Premier League season, with solid wins over Burnley and Swansea and a decent draw with Arsenal overshadowed by a drubbings at the hands of Liverpool and Manchester United and a shock defeat to managerless Hull City. However, the comprehensive win over Brugge in their first-ever Champions League tie will fill the Foxes with confidence as they welcome Porto, although the Portuguese team will prove a tougher foe.
Porto sit third in the Primeira Liga, but could only struggle to a 0-0 draw with bottom side Tondela last time out. They were held 1-1 by FC Copenhagen in their first Champions League group game and, although they notched up a 3-0 win in the second leg of their qualifier with Roma, the Italians played for almost the entire second half with nine men, making the 4-1 aggregate score more than a little flattering to Nuno Espirito Santo’s men.
Although Porto have the far greater European pedigree of the four clubs in Group G, they are not the team they once were. Trophies have been scarce in recent years and, despite reaching the Champions League quarter finals in 2014/15, they failed to qualify from the group stages last year and limped out of the Europa League in the round of 32. Their inability to beat Copenhagen in their opening group fixture raised a few eyebrows and they will not fancy taking on a Leicester side cheered on by 30,000 noisy East Midlanders.
Foxes boss Claudio Ranieri claimed the Champions League music “woke up” Riyad Mahrez in the game against Brugge and, if the Algerian puts in a similar performance on Tuesday night, he will be a constant thorn in Porto’s side. However, it was Leicester’s team spirit and belief in the face of the doubters, rather than any individual, that was a major contributor to them claiming the Premier League title last year and, although it may not win them the Champions League, they certainly have enough in the tank to beat Porto.
BetVictor’s 13/2 on the English team winning 1-0 is a good price, although the more cautious bettor might prefer Paddy Power’s 5/4 on a straight Leicester win.
