In previous Dota 2 tournaments this year, LGD Gaming were crowned Mars Dota 2 League 2017 champions in China with a 3-2 grand final victory over LGD.Forever Young. The scores were tied at 2-2 before LGD Gaming pulled away in the decisive fifth game.

Newbee have also had an impressive year after winning the Galaxy Battles tournament following a resounding 3-0 grand final triumph against Planet Odd, and claiming the ZOTAC Cup Masters in Taiwan.

Virtus.Pro took home the DOTA Summit 7 trophy in June after a 3-2 win over Team Secret in Los Angeles. Moscow hosted the EPICENTER 2017 in the same month, and Team Liquid pocketed $250,000 after seeing off Evil Genuises 3-1 in their grand final.

Sports.net’s View

Six teams have received direct invitations to the latest championships in Seattle – OG, Virtus.Pro, Evil Genuises, Team Liquid, Invictus Gaming and Newbee. A further twelve teams have earnt their places through regional qualifiers – Cloud9, Digital Chaos and Infamous from the Americas, iG Vitality, LGD.Forever Young and LGD Gaming from China, TNC Pro Team, Fnatic and Execration from South-East Asia, and Team Secret, HellRaisers and Team Empire from Europe. Teams’ odds on winning the championship from Coral are shown below, and make for interesting reading:

  • Evil Geniuses – 4/1
  • Team Liquid – 9/2
  • Virtus.Pro – 5/1
  • OG – 6/1
  • Newbee - 9/1
  • LGD Gaming – 10/1
  • Team Secret – 10/1
  • LGD.Forever Young – 12/1
  • Invictus Gaming – 16/1
  • TNC Pro Team – 18/1
  • Cloud9 – 20/1
  • Fnatic –  25/1
  • iG Vitality – 25-1
  • Execration – 40/1
  • Team Empire – 50/1
  • Digital Chaos – 50/1
  • Infamous – 50-1
  • HellRaisers – 100/1

The teams will participate in two nine-team best-of-two Round Robin groups prior to the main event, where each group’s bottom team will be eliminated. This will lead onto the sixteen-team Double Elimination main event made up of the group stage upper and lower brackets.  For Region of the Winner betting with Bet365, Europe & CIS is the favourite at 10/11, whilst both the Chinese and Americas regions are 3/1 to provide the winning team, and you can get odds of 12/1 for a South-East Asian team to prevail.

It’s no surprise to see five of the six direct invites amongst the pre-championship favourites, with Invictus Gaming slightly further back from their counterparts. The six teams haven’t had to trouble themselves with any qualifying rounds to make it to Seattle, so it’s clear to see why one of those is favourites to lift the Aegis of Champions trophy aloft. The teams who have gone through a gruelling qualification process are still in with a chance of winning, and it could be worth putting a few pounds on HellRaisers at 100/1. You never know – stranger things have happened in sport, and eSports can often be particularly unpredictable.

Wings Gaming were crowned The International 2016 champions, Evil Genuises took the title in 2015, and Newbee prevailed in 2014. All eighteen teams will be hoping to follow in their footsteps by going all the way this year in the USA.

Newbee have already won two premier tournaments in 2017, and as one of the six direct invites to The International, they are undoubtedly one of the heavyweights to look out for. In fact, they are up there with several bookmakers – including Coral and Bet365 - to secure their third premier tournament title of the year. The Chinese-based team of Xu "Moogy" Han, Song "Sccc" Chun, Damien "kpii" Chok, Hu "Kaka" Liangzhi and Zeng "Faith" Hongda will expect to reach at least the upper bracket of the double elimination main event, and from there, anything is possible.
