England's World Cup Odds Hit Record Low

There are just four teams still standing in the 2018 World Cup following a dramatic set of quarter-finals. Tournament favourites Brazil have been knocked out, hosts Russia have had to leave their own party, and even the mercurial Luis Suarez has had to go back to Uruguay with his tail between his legs.

Sweden’s hopes were also extinguished on Saturday as England produced an impressive performance to progress to the semi-finals for the first time since 1990. An expectant nation is now looking forward to the next round with the enthusiasm of a kid at Christmas, England flags are flying high, waistcoat sales are on the up and ‘Three Lions’ is being sung on every street corner.

However, England’s next opponents Croatia will be similarly optimistic, while the winner of the other semi-final between Belgium and France is sure to be the favourite to lift the trophy on Sunday. It could be one of the most memorable sporting weeks in history, and bookmakers have been working round the clock to set up some fascinating bets.

France v Belgium

  • Tuesday 10th July, 19:00 (UK time)

France have been installed as the marginal favourites for their match against European neighbours Belgium. Les Bleus were so unremarkable in their group games that it would have been easy to forget they had even sent a team to Russia, but that all changed with a dazzling 4-3 demolition of Argentina in the Round of 16.

Kylian Mbappé underlined his status as probably the most exciting young talent in world football with his display against Argentina, and can be backed as 5/1 with Ladbrokes to be first goalscorer in the semi-final. There can be no doubting the individual quality of Belgium’s defenders, but they have not looked entirely convincing as a unit - shipping five goals already at the World Cup - so Mbappé’s pace and direct approach is sure to pose problems.

France showed in their 2-0 quarter-final victory over Uruguay that they can adapt their style and win in a number of different ways, but the clash with Belgium could be their toughest test yet. Roberto Martinez’s side came from 2-0 down to beat Japan 3-2 in the Round of 16, before holding off a Brazilian onslaught to win their quarter-final 2-1. Eden Hazard, Kevin de Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku have all found their best form and the tactical restructuring for the Brazil game worked wonders.

A World Cup semi-final might normally be a tense and cautious affair, but both these teams are quite attack-minded and there could be plenty of value in some of the goals markets. At Ladbrokes, you can get price of 5/1 on France to win or draw, both teams to score in the second half and more than 2.5 goals being scored in the match.

Croatia v England

  • Wednesday 11th July, 19:00 (UK time)

England’s run to the semi-finals has fuelled the hopes of a nation and prompted bookies to slash their odds on Gareth Southgate’s men becoming champions. They are currently second favourites behind France, but can still be backed at 5/2 with Ladbrokes. “Lady Luck has been very much on England’s side so far this year, and odds of the Three Lions going all the way have hit record lows as a result,” said Alex Apati of Ladbrokes.

England were organised in defence and sharp in midfield against Sweden, having battled past Colombia on penalties in the Round of 16. They also have the tournament’s top goalscorer in Harry Kane, and the Tottenham Hotspur is a 16/5 shot with Ladbrokes to score first against Croatia. He had a quieter match in the quarter-final but this still looks like an excellent price for a man who will be desperate to shine on the big stage.

Croatia have certainly been vulnerable at the back in their past two knockout matches, having needed penalties to overcome both Denmark and Russia. The prospect of another shootout looms large for this tie, and you can take a flutter on either side to win on penalties at 8/1.

Croatia’s strength lies in midfield, where Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic pull the strings, and there have been glimpses of their class throughout the tournament. If Croatia can reproduce the sort of slick football they showed in their group-stage win over Argentina they will be very difficult to contain, and they may feel under less pressure against a team with England’s reputation. It is sure to be a nervy night for both sets of supporters, but England should be the slightly fresher side and appear to be peaking at just the right time.
