Form
- Floyd Mayweather is regarded as one of the greatest pound-for-pound boxers ever, having retired in 2015 with a perfect record of 49 wins from 49 fights. He has won world titles in five different weight divisions, most recently defeating Andre Berto at welterweight level.
- Conor McGregor has never previously boxed professionally and was only granted a licence late last year. The Irishman has made his name as a UFC superstar, winning titles at featherweight, lightweight and welterweight level before making the switch to boxing. Find out more Mayweather v McGregor facts.
Sports.net’s View
Floyd Mayweather is 40 and has not boxed in nearly two years, while McGregor is a ferociously brilliant fighter in UFC. However, to think that McGregor has a chance against Mayweather would be like suggesting that Jose Mourinho could outmanoeuvre Garry Kasparov at chess because he has a smart and strategic football brain. This is Mayweather’s territory and it is surprising that he is only rated as a 3/10 favourite with many bookies.
For all of McGregor’s bravado, he is not going to compete with someone of Mayweather’s class and experience over 12 rounds. The Irishman’s only hope is to catch him off guard with a sharp strike, but Mayweather is the ultimate defender and has the sort of ringcraft which takes a lifetime to perfect. He is not the most powerful puncher in the world but the switch to lighter gloves will boost his hopes of a knockout and odds of 5/6 on a victory by KO, TKO or disqualification look too good to resist. Even if he cannot end the fight early with his own force, McGregor will do well to maintain his discipline in the face of such expected punishment and a disqualification seems very likely in his first professional fight under boxing rules.
The market for when the fight might finish offers perhaps the greatest value, with 25/1 on Mayweather being declared the winner in the first round, but the safest bet for punters is just to back the American to live up to his reputation as one of the greatest and put the new man firmly in his place.
