Monaco is one of the most iconic races on the F1 calendar. Despite a lack of overtaking, the minimal run-off space and tyre wear create some fantastic nose-to-tail racing that can see punters rewarded for taking bets on the outsiders should they make it to the end of the race. Could we see the first winner from a team that isn’t in the ‘big three’?

Qualifying

Qualifying in pole position is important at every circuit, but Monaco takes that to the next level. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see the entire race go by without an overtake, such is the complexity of the track. Qualifying might just become the most important part of the weekend.

So far Ferrari have taken three poles to Mercedes two, including a run of three in a row through Bahrain, China and Azerbaijan. Sebastian Vettel was the pole sitter in all three of those races, so it’s no surprise to see him favoured to top the qualifying sheets in Monaco at 13/8. Ferrari teammate Kimi Raikkonen finds himself fifth favourite for pole at 8/1, despite qualifying second three times already this year and narrowly missing out on the front row in Azerbaijan.

The Mercedes cars went missing in rounds two to four as far as qualifying is concerned, but were back with a vengeance in Barcelona after locking out the top two spots with their now infamous ‘Party Mode’ engine setting. Lewis Hamilton has taken both the poles for Mercedes this year and is second favourite at 11/4 to do so in Monaco. Teammate Valtteri Bottas, who last took a pole position at Abu Dhabi in 2017, sits at the bottom of the rankings for the ‘big three teams’ at 11/1.

The Red Bulls have only beaten either Ferrari or Mercedes in qualifying once, with that coming in Azerbaijan after Raikkonen over-cooked it on what would have been a pole-setting lap. For that reason, it looks like another year of nearly but not quite for Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo in qualifying. The two are both at 4/1 to take pole, but it would take a monster lap and some serious car updates to challenge the Ferrari or Mercedes properly this week.

Race

Before you go betting on the race winner, bear in mind that whoever gets on pole will easily be the favourite to win the race. If you want to take a risk and bet before qualifying, then you will get better odds but could see your bet lose out before the race even begins. On the other hand, if you want a safer bet then wait until Saturday evening to put your money on. Either way the odds here are likely to change between now and race day.

This is the first race of the year that Vettel is the outright favourite with the bookies at 13/8, which is peculiar considering the last race in Barcelona made it look like the Mercedes were back to business. Hamilton is second favourite at 5/2. He won at Monaco in 2016 but started 14th in 2017 due to problems in qualifying. The drivers seemingly playing second fiddle to these two - Raikkonen and Bottas - have odds of 12/1 and 10/1 respectively.

Ricciardo made the podium last year and already has a race win this season, so he sees himself edge out teammate Verstappen at 4/1. Verstappen, at 5/1, will hope the rough few rounds he endured at the start of the year are over after taking a podium in Barcelona.

Outside of the big three, the bookies only seem to care about Fernando Alonso, who comes in at 250/1. Everyone else is 300/1 or more, which isn’t surprising considering a car that isn’t run by Mercedes, Ferrari or Red Bull hasn’t won a race at Monaco since 2013.
