The first race of the 2016/17 Formula E calendar will take place at the Harbourfront Circuit in Hong Kong this Sunday 9th October. This is the first time that the country has hosted an ePrix race, but the event marks the start of the third season of Formula E racing, and last year’s champion driver Sebastien Buemi will be keen to get his new campaign for the title off to the best possible start here.

How the Bookies See It

  • Race 1 Winner: Sebastien Buemi 2/1, Lucas di Grassi 9/2, Jean-Eric Vergne 9/2, Nicolas Prost 5/1 – Ladbrokes
  • Championship Winner: Sebastien Buemi 6/4, Jean-Eric Vergne 4/1, Lucas di Grassi 5/1, Nicolas Prost 6/1 - Ladbrokes

Form

  • Sebastien Buemi won three of the ten ePrix races for Renault e.Dams last season, and they included the opener in Beijing, the third race of the season in Punta del Este, and the eighth race in Berlin. He ended the season on 155 points to win the Drivers’ Championship, and that was just two points clear of next-best, Lucas di Grassi.
  • Lucas di Grassi also won three races last year, in Putrajaya, Long Beach and Paris, and that helped him to finish the season with 153 points. The Brazilian driver had also won the ePrix in Mexico for ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport, but he was then disqualified because his car was found to be underweight. If that hadn’t happened then he might well have won the 2016/17 Championship instead of Buemi.
  • Jean-Eric Vergne drove for DS Virgin Racing in 2015/16, but this year he will be racing for Techeetah. He didn’t win any races last season, but he did secure pole position in one race and he managed to achieve a podium finish in Paris and London. He ended the season with 56 points, which put him in ninth place in the Drivers’ Championship table.
  • Nicolas Prost won the last two races of the 2015/16 season for Renault e.Dams, and he also managed to finish in third place in the Mexican ePrix, giving him 115 points and third place in the table for the Drivers’ Championship. The Frenchman’s father is prolific Formula 1 winner Alain Prost, who also helps to run the Renault e.Dams team.

Sports.net’s view

The Hong Kong ePrix could well turn out to be a match between Sebastien Buemi and Lucas di Grassi. The Brazilian looks to be a good price for the Championship this year if he drives as well as he did last year and he manages to avoid any disqualifications, but Buemi won’t make it easy for him, and the Swiss driver will be just as keen to win the title for the second year running.

Nicolas Prost will also be hoping to continue the short run of success that he had at the end of last season by achieving a podium finish in Hong Kong, but our money will be on Buemi to get his 2016/17 campaign off to a winning start.

  • Sports.net’s top tip: Sebastien Buemi to win the Hong Kong ePrix at 2/1 – Ladbrokes

*Please note, odds may change as the race approaches.
