What has been a very exciting MotoGP tour arrives in the small republic of San Marino for race thirteen of the season. The San Marino MotoGP takes place at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli on Sunday 10th September.

It was back in 1980 that the first Grand Prix event took place at the Misano track, and the venue has been a permanent fixture on the MotoGP calendar since 2007 after being completely revised and remodelled. The first San Marino Grand Prix was held at Imola in 1981, but has also taken place at Mugello and is now hosted by Misano as the Gran Premio di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini.

The local area is known for producing some great riders, including the late Marco Simoncelli from the nearby town of Cattolica, whom the race is named after. Current greats Valentino Rossi, who will miss out this time around with injury, and championship leader Andrea Dovizioso also grew up in the region.

Form

Andrea Dovizioso has charged to the top of the world standings after brilliant wins in Austria and Great Britain. What is expected to be a huge crowd will roar the local boy on to what they hope will be his third straight victory. His best placed finish in recent years here is fourth, back in 2014 – but he can’t be discounted under current form.

Marc Marquez could only manage second place at Austria, before failing to finish the British GP at Silverstone last time out, dropping to second in the world standings. Marquez will be keen to spoil the party in San Marino by beating Dovizioso and knows how to do it, having won here back in 2015.

Maverick Vinales finished second at Silverstone two weeks ago, and needs another big performance to keep in touch with the top two. However, he has failed to finish on the podium here in his last five attempts and could struggle to make any impact again this time.

With no Valentino Rossi in the race, Dani Pedrosa has the chance to move up to fourth on the leaderboard, but he must pull out a huge ride to keep any title hopes alive. However, he won this race in San Marino last year and could just produce something similar.

Marc Marquez will be determined to get back on track here and repeat his 2015 win, but his odds look far too short. Andrea Dovizioso’s recent form and the fact he is the crowd favourite makes him tempting at a price at 5/1 with 32Red to win the race. Dani Pedrosa, winner here last year, is a good each-way bet to finish on the podium at 15/2 from Bet365.

Jorge Lorenzo has a fantastic record here. Other than 2015, when he failed to complete and last year when he came third, the Spaniard has finished in the top two every year since 2008, including wins in 2011, 2012 and 2013. He looks a brilliant 12/1 each-way bet at BetVictor for another win.
