The current series of the Great British Bake off may be in full swing, but ‘Breadxit’ is currently gripping the nation as one of the BBC’s most popular shows gets set to join Channel 4. Love Productions’ determination to secure a more lucrative deal for the Bake Off has been met with widespread dismay amongst fans, while presenting duo Mel and Sue’s decision to jump ship has left the programme in need of a new captain. Sports.net previews the frontrunners in the betting markets for the next GBBO hosts.

How the Bookies See it

  • Clare Balding: 8/1 - Paddy Power
  • Jo Brand: 10/1 - Paddy Power
  • French and Saunders: 11/1 - Paddy Power
  • Claudia Winkleman: 12/1 - Paddy Power
  • Victoria Coren Mitchell: 12/1 - Paddy Power
  • Tim Lovejoy and Simon Rimmer: 12/1 - Paddy Power
  • Sandi Toksvig: 12/1 - Paddy Power

The Contenders

  • Clare Balding is no stranger when it comes to presenting in front of large TV audiences, having fronted the BBC’s coverage of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. The 45-year-old sports presenter has a wealth of experience, but would parading around a cake-filled tent be to her liking?
  • Jo Brand will be familiar to Bake Off fans who tune in for the programme's spin-off, An Extra Slice on BBC2, a show that makes light of events from inside the tent. The comic, who has not yet had her say on the move,  would certainly be able to hit the ground running, entertaining Channel 4 viewers with both her humour and wit.
  • French and Saunders  could get the nod if the show's producers opt to stick with the double act set-up. The pair have an impressive comedic CV and Jennifer Saunders even has Bake Off experience, winning the Comic Relief special in 2015 before hosting the Sport Relief version earlier this year.
  • Claudia Winkleman is a firm favourite amongst fans of Strictly Come Dancing and is noted for her quirky style and scatterbrained delivery. The 44-year-old is well-known for her appearances on the BBC, so switching allegiances could backfire should the new series leave viewers with a bitter aftertaste.
  • Victoria Coren Mitchell is best known for her appearances on both radio and television panel shows and will be more than familiar to viewers of BBC2’s Only Connect. The 44-year-old has a humorous, yet efficient presenting style that Bake Off viewers may appreciate.
  • Tim Lovejoy and Simon Rimmer began their partnership on BBC2’s Something for the Weekend and continued their success as hosts of Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch. The duo have a great on-screen rapport, but could their laid-back Sunday morning style keep prime time audiences entertained?
  • Sandi Toksvig has plenty of experience when it comes to fronting television shows and most recently hosted the revived series of Fifteen-to-One and is the new QI host. The Danish-born author and comic seems to be able to turn her hand to any job she is given and could be worth keeping an eye on.

Sports.net’s view

Sue and Mel’s departure could deal a massive blow to the Great British Bake Off, especially if a safe pair of hands cannot be found to replace them. Mary Berry has also decided to reject the move, instead opting to remain loyal to the BBC, however, Paul Hollywood has elected to follow the dough.

With Channel 4 unable to broadcast the show until 2018 at the earliest, there is plenty of time for Love Productions to find a new host, but will the popularity remain? William Hill are offering odds of 5/6 that the first episode of the new series will attract less than 10 million viewers.

Should the show opt to stick with a double act, Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders may be given the nod, but don’t rule out a single presenter taking the helm. A comedic approach, similar to that of Mel and Sue, may be called for, so keep an eye on Jo Brand and Sandi Toksvig.

  • Sports.net’s top tip: Jo Brand to be named as next GBBO presenter 10/1 - Paddy Power.
