2017 MotoGP Grand Prix of the Americas Betting Preview

Updated Sunday 23rd April 2017, 07:01 PM

The 2017 MotoGP Grand Prix of the Americas will take place at the Circuit of the Americas near Austin, Texas this Sunday 23 April. Maverick Vinales will head into that race at the top of the riders’ championship table, having won the first two Grand Prix events of the current season, and he will no doubt be looking to extend that winning sequence to three this weekend. That said, Marc Marquez has won this race every year since his MotoGP debut in 2013, so he will be just as keen to maintain his own winning streak at this venue.

How the Bookies See It

  • Race winner: Vinales 6/4. Marquez 7/4. Rossi 9/2, Dovizioso 10/1 - Paddy Power

  • Maverick Vinales has earned 50 points this season, having won the Grand Prix races in both Qatar in March and in Argentina earlier this month. Vinales is just 22-years-old, but has been racing competitively since childhood, and was Moto3 World Champion in 2013 as well as Best Rookie in the MotoGP class in 2015. His performance thus far in 2017 demonstrates that the best of his career could still be yet to come, and bookmakers have responded by making him the odds-on favourite to win this year’s Riders Championship title.
  • Marc Marquez has yet to win his first race of the season. He finished in fourth place in Qatar, but he crashed out of an early lead in Argentina, and that puts him on a total of 13 points and in ninth place in the Riders’ Championship table. Had Marquez not fallen in Argentina then he may well have continued at the head of the pack, so he could well be poised to win at the Circuit of the Americas for the fifth time in as many years.
  • Valentino Rossi is second in the Riders Championship table with a total of 36 points. That total was earned thanks to the 38-year-old Italian achieving a third place finish in Qatar and a second place finish in Argentina. Whilst that isn’t as good a start to the season as Vinales has achieved, it is still a rather impressive one, and it would be no surprise to see him in the mix once again in the Americas.

Sports.net’s View

This looks to us like it could turn out to be a match between Maverick Vinales and Marc Marquez, with the former looking to extend his flawless start to the season and the latter being just as keen to maintain his streak of wins at the Circuit of the Americas. Which of the two will prevail remains to be seen, but we are more inclined to put our trust in current form, so we will side with Vinales to make it three from three in 2017.

  • Sports.net’s Top Tip: Maverick Vinales to win the 2017 MotoGP Grand Prix of the Americas at 6/4 with Paddy Power
