The White Group - Karolina Pliskova booked her place in the semi-finals with emphatic victories over Venus Williams and Garbine Muguruza. Williams later joined her in the last four after getting the better of Muguruza in a decisive final group game, with Latvia’s French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko already eliminated.
The Red Group - Caroline Wozniacki cruised into the semi-finals after demolishing Elina Svitolina and Simona Halep. However, she did not win the group as in-form Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia recovered from an opening-day loss to Halep to record two straight wins over Svitolina and Wozniacki.
In a season when all the top players have shown flashes of brilliance but also suffered spells of inconsistency, the key to success in Singapore will be peaking at the right time. Simona Halep came into the tournament as the No.1 player in the world but fell away in the group after a strong start against Carolina Garcia. The Frenchwoman, who has surged up the rankings over the past couple of months, will now play Venus Williams in the semi-finals after a couple of good wins to clinch top spot in the White Group, with Karolina Pliskova set to face Caroline Wozniacki.
Pliskova is perhaps the biggest hitter of them all, and appears to have her mojo back at the WTA finals. The Czech player had faded since the middle of the year and made surprisingly early exits at both Wimbledon and the US Open, but the fast indoor court seems to really suit her style. She has the best serve in the tournament and, when she is able to control her power, looks close to unbeatable. Pliskova may be the tournament favourite but the odds are still attractive as she bids to end the year with a flourish.
