Euro 2016: Player of the Tournament Odds and Betting Tips

Updated Monday 11th July 2016, 08:46 AM

As this summer’s European festival of football draws to a close with Portugal taking on hosts France in Paris on Sunday, the question of who will pick up the coveted Player of the Tournament prize is on everyone’s lips. With so many of the other markets nailed down, betting on who will take this acclaim could prove to be a shrewd punt. Find out who the bookies are tipping to take home the award.

How the Bookies See it

  • Antoine Griezmann: 8/15 - Paddy Power
  • Cristiano Ronaldo: 4/1 - BetVictor
  • Gareth Bale: 6/1 - BetVictor
  • Dimitri Payet: 8/1 - BetVictor
  • Paul Pogba: 14/1 - Bet365

The Contenders

  • Antoine Griezmann has been a revelation in this competition and is pretty much odds on to take the title. The Atletico Madrid forward’s six goals and two assists in seven matches have helped propel France to a European final on home soil and given Griezmann an excellent shot at stealing this year’s Ballon d’Or away from the clutches of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. A positive performance in the final could clinch the prize for the 25-year-old.
  • Cristiano Ronaldo has had a mixed tournament, to say the least. A brace against Hungary in the final game of Group F and a salmon-like leap to score a wonderful towering header against Wales in the semi-final are perhaps covering the cracks of several unconvincing showings against the likes of Iceland, Austria and Poland. The Real Madrid man needs a Man-of-the-Match-style performance in the final to stand a chance of claiming the award.
  • Gareth Bale played a crucial part in Wales’ run to the semi-finals of the tournament. Superb free-kicks against Slovakia and England proved why Real Madrid broke the bank to sign him in 2013, while a third goal against Russia allowed the proud Welshman to sit atop the top scorers chart in the early round of fixtures. A spirited performance against Belgium in the quarterfinals could make him a dark horse.
  • Dimitri Payet grabbed two sublime goals in France’s opening games against Romania and Albania. The 29-year-old was hotly tipped to run away with the prize earlier in the competition, but he may ultimately miss out to one of his fellow teammates despite carrying his nation in the early stages.
  • Paul Pogba has improved dramatically in the latter stages of the tournament after being dropped for France’s second group game with Albania. The 23-year-old’s power and pace have finally shone through as Les Bleus saw off Ireland, Iceland and, most impressively of all, world champions Germany.’s View

The race to be named Player of the Tournament looks set to go right down to the last kick of the final, with Griezmann and Ronaldo looking the most likely to claim victory. The result may come down to whoever can contribute the most to their side’s push for the trophy. Don’t rule out a late push from Payet and Pogba, but Griezmann’s goals leading up to the final could just seal the prize.

•’s top tip: Player of the Tournament - Antoine Griezmann 8/15 - Paddy Power
