FA Cup Betting Preview: Burnley v Lincoln City

Updated Thursday 23rd February 2017, 08:43 AM

Lincoln City’s remarkable FA Cup journey sees them face a daunting trip to Turf Moor to face Premier League side Burnley. The Imps, who will be playing in the fifth round for the first time in 115 years, could become only the second non-league team in 28 years to knock top flight opposition out of this famous competition, while Burnley will feel a place in the last eight is there for the taking.

How the Bookies See it

  • Winner: Burnley 7/20, Draw 18/5, Lincoln City 13/2 - William Hill
  • First Goalscorer: Andre Gray (BUR) 3/1, Sam Vokes (BUR) 10/3, Ashley Barnes (BUR) 3/1 - Sky Bet
  • Correct Score: Burnley 2-0 6/1, Burnley 1-0 13/2, Burnley 3-0 15/2 - William Hill

  • Burnley began their FA Cup quest with a drab 0-0 draw away at Sunderland, before seeing off the Black Cats 2-0 at Turf Moor. Another comfortable 2-0 home win followed, this time against Championship strugglers Bristol City, as the Clarets booked their place in round five for the first time in six years. In the league, the Lancashire club have struggled to string results together, but have made home advantage count with 29 of their 30 points this term coming at the Turf. Last week’s 1-1 draw with Premier League leaders Chelsea only confirmed just how difficult Sean Dyche’s men are to overcome in front of their own fans.
  • Lincoln City’s run in this season’s FA Cup has been thrilling to watch. Victories over Guiseley and Altrincham in the early rounds were expected of the National League leaders, while a second round 3-2 win against League One strugglers Oldham Athletic came as a pleasant surprise. The plucky Imps then happily despatched of 1978 Cup winners Ipswich Town, following a third-round replay at Sincil Bank, before putting Championship promotion-chasers Brighton to the sword in an imperious fourth round display. In the league, Lincoln are well on-course to secure a return to league football for the first time since 2011, having taken 64 points from 30 games.

Sports.net’s View

Burnley are the overwhelming favourites ahead of this game and it’s clear to see why. The Clarets have gained a reputation for being very difficult to break down on home soil, with Liverpool, Chelsea and Premier League champions Leicester City all failing to leave the former mill town with maximum points. Unsurprisingly, the bookmakers don’t see Lincoln leaving Lancashire with anything other than a sound hiding. Odds of 7/20 with William Hill on a home win don’t look too appetising, but a win to nil might get punters licking their lips at 23/20.

However, Lincoln certainly won’t be bullied by Burnley and could use their strong front men to their advantage. A goal at anytime for hulking forward Matt Rhead looks tempting at 11/1 with Paddy Power, while third-round hero Nathan Arnold commands similar odds. And should the away side nick a goal, a shock be on the cards, with a truly memorable Lincoln win available at 10/1 with Sky Bet.

However, not all fairytales have a happy ending, and Lincoln could be blown away if Burnley hit the kind of form that saw them clinch the Championship title last season. A 3-0 win for the 1914 FA Cup winners looks good value at 8/1 with Paddy Power, while a haul of over 3.5 goals is available at 10/3 with Bet365.

  • Sports.net’s top tip: Burnley to win 3-0 - 8/1 at Paddy Power
