FA Cup Betting Preview: Manchester United v Wigan Athletic

Updated Friday 24th February 2017, 03:59 PM

Defending champions Manchester United will be hoping to avoid an embarrassing FA Cup fourth round exit at the hands of Championship strugglers Wigan Athletic. These two sides last met in 2013, but a lot has changed in the space of three-and-a-half years. While the Red Devils have been adapting to life after Sir Alex Ferguson, the Latics have endured a rollercoaster ride through the divisions. However, Sunday’s meeting will see both clubs take to the Old Trafford pitch with one thing in mind - progression to the fifth round.

How the Bookies See it:

  • Winner: Manchester United 2/11, Draw 7/1, Wigan 18/1 - Bet365
  • First Goalscorer: Zlatan Ibrahimovic (MUN) 13/5, Marcus Rashford (MUN) 3/1, Wayne Rooney (MUN) 10/3 - William Hill
  • Correct Score: Man Utd 2-0 11/2, Man Utd 3-0 6/1, Man Utd 1-0 13/2 - Bet365

  • Manchester United’s midweek EFL Cup semi-final second leg defeat to Hull was the club’s first defeat since early November, but still didn’t stop the Red Devils reaching their first major cup final under the rule of Jose Mourinho. The ‘Special One’ fielded a strong starting XI in the club’s third round 4-0 win over Reading and could take a similar approach in this game.
  • Wigan Athletic are floundering in the Championship following their return from League One. The Latics, who are on their second manager of the season in the shape of former United Reserves coach Warren Joyce, find themselves precariously placed, with just goal difference between them and the relegation zone. Six wins in 27 league games tells its own story, but recent wins over Burton Albion and Brentford look to have sparked a mini revival for the Lancashire club. A 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest in round three provided a glimmer of hope in what has otherwise been a season to forget for fans at the DW Stadium.

Sports.net’s view

Manchester United may have put in a limp performance in Thursday’s defeat to Hull, but don’t expect the 12-time winners to play as poorly this weekend. The Red Devils, who have not fallen victim to lower league opposition in the FA Cup since defeat to Leeds United in 2010, will aim to wrap this tie up as quickly as possible, making a bet on Man United/Man United in the half time/full time market look appealing - 4/6 with Coral.

United are able to boast a 100 percent record against Wigan at Old Trafford, a run the Stretford club will be looking to maintain. The two sides came face-to-face in the Premier League on 16 occasions between 2006 and 2013, in which Man United racked up an impressive 50 goals. Another big win could be on the cards, especially if Zlatan Ibrahimovic (8/13 with William Hill to score any time) is given space to weave his magic. A 4-0 home win looks well priced at 19/2 with BetVictor, while a haul of over 4.5 goals also looks enticing at 5/1 with Bet365.

Wigan’s record against Manchester United makes for bleak reading. In 18 previous meetings with the Red Devils, Athletic picked up just one win (a 1-0 victory in April 2012). In fact, the Latics have only ever breached the United backline five times, making victory this Sunday look even less likely. However, the FA Cup has a habit of throwing up shocks from time to time, and an away win (18/1) could land brave punters a very tidy sum.

  • Sports.net’s top tip: Man United to win 4-0 - 19/2 with BetVictor
