FA Cup Third Round Betting Preview: Chelsea v Peterborough

Updated Tuesday 10th January 2017, 03:19 PM

Stamford Bridge is the venue for the third round FA Cup tie between Chelsea and Peterborough this Sunday 8 January. The two teams have played each other twice before in this competition, and Chelsea won both of those games in decisive manner, so Peterborough will be hoping to make it third time lucky this weekend. Bookmakers are offering a big price for them doing that, whilst Chelsea are being offered at very short odds to complete the hat trick, so what might be a sensible outcome to bet on at a worthwhile price?

How the Bookies See It:

  • Winner: Chelsea 1/7, Draw 13/2, Peterborough 16/1 – Paddy Power
  • Win to Nil: Chelsea 5/6, Peterborough 33/1 – Sky Bet
  • Half-Time/Full-Time: Chelsea/Chelsea 8/13, Draw/Chelsea 16/5, Draw/Draw 10/1 – Ladbrokes

  • Chelsea are at the top of the Premier League table, and some five points clear of their nearest rivals. They have won 16 of their 20 league matches this season, with one draw and three defeats. The team have also been rather prolific on the goal scoring front, with 42 goals scored and just 15 conceded, for an average of 2.1 goals scored per game. As far as the FA Cup is concerned, Chelsea have won the competition seven times, the most recent being in 2012, and they have been runners-up on four occasions. Chelsea first played Peterborough in the cup in 1965, when they won their Quarter Final match 5-1, and they met again in 2001 when the London club won their third-round match 5-0.
  • Peterborough United are eighth in the League One table, having won ten, drawn eight and lost six of their 24 matches. With 38 goals scored and 26 conceded in the league, they have scored an average of 1.58 goals per game. They beat Notts County by 2-0 in their previous FA Cup match on Tuesday 20th December, and they have settled for 1-1 draws in each of their last three league matches against Gillingham, Coventry and Scunthorpe. Their last league success was achieved on Saturday 17th December when the Posh beat Charlton 2-0. Peterborough have never reached an FA Cup Final, and their best result in this competition was reaching the Quarter Final in 1965, when they were knocked out by this weekend's opponents.

Sports.net’s View

Peterborough fans may well be hoping that their team can get finally get the better of their Premier League hosts, but the chances of them doing that are slim to say the least. Whilst they are holding their own in League One, that is a world away from the standard of the Premier League, where Chelsea were dominating in style before Wednesday's defeat at Tottenham. That came after a sequence of thirteen consecutive wins, and that blip in the form book won’t shake their confidence against the likes of Peterborough one bit.

We are confident that Chelsea will win this match, and history suggests that they will do so by a wide margin. Although we are tempted to bet on there being more than 4.5 goals in the match, we will instead exercise caution and side with Chelsea to be winning at both half-time and full-time.

  • Sports.net’s top tip: Chelsea to win at Half-Time/Full-Time – 8/13 with Ladbrokes
