Blackpool secured a play-off spot on the final day of the season thanks to a 3-1 victory over relegated Leyton Orient, having lost 1-0 to Notts County in their previous game. They have been consistent throughout the League Two campaign and boast a proud home record, having won ten games at Bloomfield Road and lost four times out of 23.
Luton’s chances of automatic promotion evaporated some time ago, but they ended the season strongly to finish six points clear of anyone else in the play-offs. The Hatters are unbeaten in seven matches and have won three-in- a-row ahead of the play-offs, including a 3-1 win at home to Morecambe on the last day.
Luton did the double over Blackpool during the regular season, winning both games without conceding a goal. Jack Marriott and Cameron McGeehan hit the target in a 2-0 win at Bloomfield Road in December, before Ollie Palmer’s injury-time goal proved the difference between the sides at Luton on 1st April.
Luton have failed in four previous play-off campaigns in the past 20 years but boss Nathan Jones has brushed off talk of a curse and confidence will be high within his squad. The Hatters finished seven points ahead of Blackpool, they are in better form and they won both matches between the sides this season. The good news for punters is that they are also the underdogs for the first leg, making an away win a very appealing choice. Only champions Portsmouth had a better defensive record than Luton, while they also possess an attacking threat, courtesy of Danny Hylton who came third in the division’s scoring charts.
Blackpool cannot be written off and have shown plenty of spirit just to finish in the top seven following one of the closest play-off races in history. Kyle Vassell and Nathan Delfouneso have the pace to trouble any defence and the Seasiders will be strong at home, but a tight game can be expected in the first leg and odds of 9/4 with Sky Bet on there being under 1.5 goals in the match look quite inviting. A correct score prediction of 1-0 to Luton offers even greater value at 19/2 with BetVictor, but even a straight bet on the visitors to win could yield a good return as many of the key factors are in their favour.
