The Houston Astros are still top of the American League, but have only won twice in their last five games – including two defeats at home against the mid-table Seattle Mariners. The Astros now travel to the Baltimore Orioles for a weekend of fixtures, with the Orioles on a run of four straight wins, which included two crushing defeats of the Texas Rangers. This could be a fascinating match-up, but can confident Baltimore expose Houston’s frailties as the Seattle Mariners did?
The Boston Red Sox remain second in the American League, thanks to two useful wins against the Toronto Blue Jays, but they also suffered two defeats against the Canadian team. Boston travel to the Los Angeles Angels this weekend boasting inconsistent form, but face rivals going through a similar spell.
The LA Dodgers, top of the American League, suffered defeat for the first time in twelve games when losing their first of four weekend matches at home to the Atlanta Braves. That was a surprise result, as it was the Braves first win in four games – so the Dodgers have to see this as a minor blip and confidence surely remains high.
The Washington Nationals in second picked up three good wins at the Cincinnati Reds, before a victory at the LA Angels. However, they then lost 7-0 to their hosts and now travel to the Arizona Diamondbacks, who sit fourth. These weekend fixtures are huge for both clubs and, depending on other results, could see the sides swap positions in the National League.
The Houston Astros remain strong favourites to win at the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday at odds of 4/6 but, considering the form the Orioles are in, they look great value at 13/10.
The Milwaukee Brewers sit third in the National League, but go into their game at bottom side Philadelphia Phillies having lost their last five games. Despite that form, the Brewers look good value to win at the Phillies on Saturday at 23/20. Elsewhere, the Tampa Bay Rays look another good bet, at 11/10 to win at home against a Texas Rangers side who have lost their last five games.
Two of the sides in form in the National League meet, as the Colorado Rockies host the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Rockies come into the weekend on a run of four straight wins, whilst the Pirates can boast five straight wins and just one defeat in nine. The market has the Rockies as favourites at ¾, with 6/5 on the Pirates, but the Pirates have shown they know how to win close games, so the value is with them.
