MLS Season Preview and Betting Tips

Updated Sunday 5th March 2017, 10:11 PM

With the dust having only just settled on Seattle Sounders’ MLS Cup victory over Toronto FC, the latest instalment of this thrilling club competition is set to return, bigger and better than ever. Expect there to be plenty of competition between the two New York sides (Red Bulls and City) in the Eastern Conference, while LA Galaxy and current champions Seattle will hope to conquer the Western Conference. We preview the main contenders for MLS Cup glory.

The Contenders

Eastern Conference

New York Red Bulls  - Last year saw the Red Bulls finish top of the Eastern Conference, before a disappointing 3-1 aggregate defeat to Montreal Impact in the Conference semi-finals saw their season end prematurely. Favourites to clinch the MLS Cup in 2017, this team could take some stopping, especially if Bradley Wright-Phillips continues to find the net on a regular basis.

  • Eastern Conference winner: 11/4 - William Hill
  • MLS Cup winner: 6/1 - William Hill

Toronto FC - Beaten finalists last time out, Toronto will be aiming to go one step further this season. As ever, the Reds will rely heavily on Sebastian Giovinco, with the Italian providing a real threat whenever he ventures forward. Another decent season alongside former Sunderland forward Jozy Altidore could see the Canadian outfit go a long way.

  • Eastern Conference winner: 11/4 - William Hill
  • MLS Cup winner: 6/1 - William Hill

New York City  - Narrowly pipped at the top of the Eastern Conference last season by rivals Red Bulls, City will have their eyes firmly fixed on top spot this year. With Patrick Vieira at the helm, The Bronx Blues are still able to boast a galaxy of superstars, including World Cup winners David Villa and Andrea Pirlo, and could well be the dark horses should they reach the latter stages of the competition.

  • Eastern Conference winner: 7/1 - William Hill
  • MLS Cup winner: 16/1 - William Hill

Western Conference

Seattle Sounders - Having secured their first MLS Cup last season, the reigning champions will certainly be hungry for more success this term. Led by the 33-year-old Clint Dempsey, the Sounders are amongst the favourites to triumph in 2017, but there will be a host of teams desperate to get one over on the current holders.

  • Western Conference winner: 7/2 - William Hill
  • MLS Cup winner: 7/1 - William Hill

LA Galaxy - Galaxy may have been able to field the likes of Steven Gerrard and Robbie Keane last season, but neither could help MLS’ most successful outfit land a sixth title. Their mega stars may have since departed, but LA still have plenty of firepower in their arsenal, and fans will be hoping that their side performs far better following last season’s Conference semifinal exit at the hands of Colorado Rapids.

  • Western Conference winner: 11/4 - William Hill
  • MLS Cup winner: 11/2 - William Hill

Colorado Rapids - Having narrowly missed out on the Supporters’ Shield last season, Colorado will desperate to better themselves in 2017. Defeat to Seattle in the Conference Finals may have been disappointing, but many fans at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park would be more than happy with a similar showing this year.

  • Western Conference winner: 5/1 - William Hill
  • MLS Cup winner: 10/1 - William Hill
