Premier League Betting Preview: Manchester United v Southampton

Updated Saturday 20th August 2016, 12:18 AM

Manchester United face their second south-coast test in the space of a week as Southampton travel to Old Trafford for the first Friday night football of the season. Jose Mourinho will be hoping that his team can build on their win at Bournemouth, while Claude Puel’s Saints will be eying the first major scalp of the new campaign. The game could also see Premier League fans treated to their first glimpse of world-record signing Paul Pogba.

How the Bookies See it

  • Winner: Manchester United 4/9, Draw 10/3, Southampton 13/2 - Sky Bet
  • First Goalscorer: Zlatan Ibrahimovic 3/1, Wayne Rooney 5/1, Marcus Rashford 11/2 - Paddy Power
  • Correct Score: Manchester United 1-0 11/2, Manchester United 2-0 6/1, Draw 1-1 8/1 - Bet365

Manchester United come into this game full of confidence following a productive summer in the transfer market. Jose Mourinho is slowly implementing his style of football and casting off the shackles left by former manager Louis van Gaal, something that was evident in pre-season. There is a positive mood around Old Trafford and the side’s 3-1 win at Bournemouth on the opening weekend of the season will have only increased the Red Devils’ optimism.

Southampton are in the same boat as their opponents from the north as they too are adapting to life under a new manager. Claude Puel witnessed his side kick off their campaign with a 1-1 draw with Watford, but the Saints seemed to lack the same cutting edge that saw them rifle home 14 goals in their final four games last term. This is certainly something that their new boss will have to work on if Southampton are to succeed on both a domestic and European front this season.’s view

Manchester United will be looking to establish an early lead in the race for the Premier League crown, and victory over a Southampton side adapting to a fresh face in the dugout could be a step in the right direction as Mourinho’s team aim to show off their title credentials. The home side are the bookmaker’s favourites, with a win to nil priced at 20/21 with Boylesports. Alternatively, United to win and both teams to score can be picked up at a price of 13/5 with William Hill.

This game could see Paul Pogba make his long-awaited return to the United first team, after the midfielder missed the team’s opening game through a suspension picked up at former club Juventus. The 23-year-old is 7/1 with Bet365 to make an instant impact and find the net first, while a goal anytime for the Frenchman is available at 5/2 with Sky Bet. For those feeling a little luckier, the world’s most expensive footballer is 22/1 with William Hill to find the net on his debut at anytime and inspire his team to a comfortable 3-0 win.

Southampton are unbeaten in their last three trips to Old Trafford, winning two and drawing one. The Saints snatched a dramatic late win last season thanks to an 87th minute strike from debutant Charlie Austin, a scoreline many fans would settle for this time around. The club from the south coast are generously priced to repeat that feat this season and leave Manchester with all three points. Austin is seen as the side’s best hope of grabbing a goal and is 19/5 with 888Sport to net anytime, while Saturday’s saviour Nathan Redmond is 6/1 with Paddy Power to pull off the same exploit.

  •’s top tip: Southampton to win 1-0 - 18/1 with Bet365
