Premier League Football Preview: West Ham United v Manchester City

Updated Wednesday 1st February 2017, 10:21 PM

This Wednesday sees Manchester City travel to the London Stadium to face West Ham United in a game that could have a huge impact on the race for a place in the top four this season. Pep Guardiola’s side, buoyed by their 5-0 FA Cup third round demolition of the Hammers in early January, will be aiming to record a similar result this time around, while the team in claret and blue will begin life without their talismanic midfielder, Dimitri Payet. previews the betting ahead of an action packed evening in East London.

How the Bookies See it

  • Winner: Manchester City 11/20, Draw 18/5, West Ham United 5/1 - BetVictor
  • First Goalscorer: Sergio Aguero (MCI) 15/4, Gabriel Jesus (MCI) 15/4, Kelechi Iheanacho (MCI) 4/1 - Bet365
  • Correct Score: Draw 1-1 8/1, Manchester City 2-1 8/1, Manchester City 2-0 17/2 - Bet365

  • West Ham United are beginning to adapt to life at the London Stadium, but defeats to both Manchester clubs in early January may have knocked the morale of the home supporters. A 3-0 win over relegation-threatened Crystal Palace will have helped relieve some of the pressure on Slaven Bilic, especially given that former Hammers boss Sam Allardyce was occupying the opposition dugout. West Ham further eased their early season woes by rattling off a 3-1 win over Middlesbrough, before enjoying a rare weekend off thanks to their early exit from the FA Cup.
  • Manchester City’s recent form has been most perplexing. Wins over Burnley in the league and West Ham in the FA Cup seemed to suggest City were back to their best, but a 4-0 defeat to Everton cast some very dark clouds the club, as Guardiola’s future was called into question. In their next game, the Citizens responded by racing into a two goal lead against Spurs, only to be denied by a stirring comeback from the North London outfit. An emphatic 3-0 win over Crystal Palace may have restored some pride, but are cracks beginning to show in Pep’s management style?’s view

West Ham fans will be praying that their team performs a lot better in this game than they did when these two sides met in the FA Cup. However, history suggests the home support may be in for another evening of disappointment against the men in sky blue, with City having lost just one of their last eight trips to East London since 2010. The home side’s only success in that time came in 2014, when strikes from Morgan Amalfitano and Diafra Sakho helped United to a 2-1 win. A repeat of that scoreline is being priced at 18/1, while an unfancied West Ham victory is available at 5/1 - both with Bet365.

Man City’s Leroy Sane has been in terrific form of late, netting three goals in his last three games. The 21-year-old arrived at the Etihad in the summer of 2016 for a fee of £37 million, but this hefty sum doesn’t seem to have phased the former Schalke player. A fourth consecutive goal (anytime) for the German international is priced at 5/2 with Betfred, while odds of 10/1 are available on Sane grabbing the final goal in an away win.

Should Sane and Co. click, City could do some damage in this game. A win for the Etihad club appears good value at 4/7 (with Coral), but the more enticing odds are in the correct score market. Bets on 2-0 (17/2 with BetVictor) and 3-0 (12/1 with Bet365) do look inviting, but don’t rule out the Hammers putting up a fight and perhaps grabbing a goal, especially given City’s problems with keeping clean sheets this term. With this in mind, plumping for 2-1 or 3-1 might prove to be the more sensible option.

  •’s top tip: Man City to win 3-1 - 12/1 with Bet365
