Premier League: Manchester United v Liverpool Betting Tips

Updated Monday 16th January 2017, 08:21 AM

A fierce rivalry will be resumed on Sunday when Manchester United take on Liverpool at Old Trafford. As both teams go in search of vital Premier League points and fans hope for bragging rights, there are a host of betting options for one of the most keenly-anticipated games of the season so far.

How the Bookies See it

  • Winner: Manchester United 6/5, Draw 23/10, Liverpool 5/2 - Paddy Power
  • First Goalscorer: Zlatan Ibrahimovic 4/1, Marcus Rashford 5/1, Daniel Sturridge 11/2 - Bet365
  • Correct Score: Draw 1-1 6/1, Man Utd 1-0 15/2, Man Utd 2-1 17/2 - BetVictor

  • Manchester United made it six league wins in a row with their 2-0 victory at West Ham United on 2nd January, and have kept the momentum going with cup victories over Reading and Hull City. They remain sixth in the league despite their great run and trail table-toppers Chelsea by ten points, but have made up ground on the leading pack.
  • Liverpool are five points better off than Manchester United and occupy second place in the table ahead of the latest round of games. They are also in decent form, having won four straight Premier League matches to end 2016, but they have faltered slightly since the turn of the year with a 2-2 draw against Sunderland, FA Cup stalemate against lowly Plymouth Argyle and 1-0 EFL Cup loss to Southampton.
  • The match between the teams at Anfield earlier this season ended in a turgid 0-0 draw, ending a run of four straight wins for United in league head-to-heads. Liverpool did come out on top in the Europa League tie they contested last season, though, and Jurgen Klopp has only lost one of his previous bouts against Jose Mourinho, winning three.’s View

Liverpool might hold the advantage in terms of league positions, but United would appear to have the greater momentum. Jose Mourinho finally seems to have settled on a successful formula, with summer signings Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan becoming increasingly influential and Zlatan Ibrahimovic at the peak of his powers.

The Swedish striker has 13 Premier League goals to his name and has the ideal style to make life miserable for a Liverpool defence which seems to have slipped backwards again in recent weeks. He is the understandable favourite in the goalscoring markets, but still looks a good price at 2/1 with Ladbrokes for a Score/Win double.

Liverpool will be determined to get back on track following a couple of disappointing performances and will hope to have more joy with their high-intensity game at Old Trafford than they managed in the 0-0 draw between the teams at Anfield. United are much less likely to sit back on home turf and that could play into Liverpool’s hands. However, with Sadio Mane absent and Philippe Coutinho unlikely to be quite back to full throttle following his long injury lay-off, United will be difficult to stop.

•’s top tip: Zlatan Ibrahimovic to score and Manchester United to win - 2/1 at Ladbrokes
