Salford Red Devils’ defeat to Leeds last time out put paid to their play-off hopes, and they only have themselves to blame. They have won just once in nine games, following what was a strong start to the season. St Helens have been one of the most inconsistent sides in Super League this year, but currently occupy fourth place in the table. Thanks to their superior points difference, they should secure a play-off place if they make it three wins on the bounce this weekend.

Wakefield Trinity have been beset by off-field problems and that has clearly affected the quality of their rugby. Flying high for much of the season, they need to pull out of the nosedive that has seen them lose their last two games, win this weekend and hope that Saints lose. Wigan Warriors made a late charge for the play-offs, but a run of four wins was stopped by Castleford last week and now they need to beat Trinity and hope that Salford can overcome Saints or Hull lose to Cas.’s View

Third-placed Hull are two points clear of Saints and Wigan, but must travel to league winners Castleford on Friday. Most pundits expect them to lose, which really opens up the final two play-off positions.

Saints should have little trouble overcoming beleaguered Salford, but 1/7 on a Saints win is not massively inspiring. William Hill’s 10/11 on them prevailing even with a handicap of 16 is worth a shout.

Wigan will also expect to take home the two points from Wakefield, given the way the home side have crumbled recently. All of which would see Saints and Wigan join Cas and Leeds in the final four, with Hull edged out on points difference.

Looking ahead, 7/1 from Betfred on Wigan unexpectedly repeating last year’s feat and winning the Grand Final is looking more than tempting.’s Top Tip
