The 2016/17 Aviva Rugby Union Premiership season gets underway this Friday, and Saracens will be hoping to make headlines once again by winning the championship title for the third time in a row. Bookmakers have the London team installed as the firm favourites to achieve that feat, but it would be a mistake to think that it is by any means a foregone conclusion, and plenty of other teams will be lining up to prove that point.

Form

  • Saracens had a tremendous 2015/16 season, winning both the European Champions Cup and then  following up by beating Exeter 28-20 to take the domestic title for the second year running. The stats for last year show that Saracens played 22 Premiership matches which resulted in 17 wins, 1 draw and 4 losses, giving them a final tally of 80 points. The two back-to-back Premiership wins set things up very nicely for a shot at the Premiership title hat trick.
  • Wasps won 15 of their Premiership matches last year and lost 7, earning 72 points for a third place finish on the table. That was three places better than they managed in 2014/15, and the best finishing position that they have attained for quite some time.
  • Exeter also ended the 2015/16 season with 15 wins and 7 losses, but finished second on the table with 74 points. They put up a stern fight in last year’s Grand Final, and came back from being on the disappointing side of a 23-6 score line at half-time to finish the game 28-20.

Sports.net’s View

Both Wasps and Exeter will be extremely keen to improve on their already impressive performance last year, and of the two teams we would expect Exeter to be the most dangerous. They will have taken a great deal of encouragement from finishing second in the table after their fifth-place finish of 2014/15, and will be looking to do even better this season by taking the title itself.

Saracens are worthy favourites to be the regular season winners and also the Grand Final winners. Whilst they won’t have Jacques Burger this year, and Owen Farrell will be absent at the start of the season due to what is being treated as a ‘minor’ back injury, they will have the recently signed South African flanker Schalk Burger to compensate. All other things being equal, we are confident that Saracens have a decent chance of making it three title wins in a row.

  • Sports.net’s Top Tip: Saracens to win the Grand Final – 5/4
