UEFA Champions League Betting Tips: Manchester City v Celtic

Updated Wednesday 7th December 2016, 11:44 AM

Tuesday evening sees Manchester City host Celtic as the curtain descends on the Champions League group stages. Although the final outcome of Group C is already set in stone, both sides will be desperate to claim bragging rights in the latest instalment of the battle of Britain. Pep Guardiola’s men will be hoping for a positive result that will inspire confidence in the team ahead of a gruelling Christmas schedule, while Brendan Rodgers’ side must play for pride alone following a disappointing campaign on the continent.

How the Bookies See it

  • Winner: Man City 1/3, Draw 17/4, Celtic 7/1 - Sky Bet
  • Half Time/Full Time: Man City/Man City 20/21, Draw/Man City 7/2, Draw/Draw 9/1 - BetVictor
  • Correct Score: Man City 2-0 15/2, Man City 2-1 8/1, Man City 3-0 8/1 - William Hill

  • Manchester City made reasonably light work of qualifying for the last 16 of this year’s competition, despite picking up just two wins from five matches. Guardiola’s team looked as though they were in trouble after collecting four points from their first three fixtures, but a 3-1 win over Spanish giants Barcelona and a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Borussia Monchengladbach have seen the Citizens ease through in second place. Domestically, City haven’t been at their best, yet still remain in the hunt for their third Premier League title in six seasons.
  • Celtic’s return to the Champions League won’t have the fairytale ending that their fans were hoping for. Two points from five games has left the Bhoys floundering at the foot of Group C, with even the prospect of Europa League football now an impossibility.  A 1-1 draw with Monchengladbach on Matchday 4 gave the perennial Scottish champions the chance to mount a late charge for a third place finish, but the prospect of European football after the winter break was quickly snuffed out following a 2-0 defeat to Barcelona. On home soil, Celtic are in cruise control at the top of the Scottish Premiership, while their recent Betfred Cup win was the club’s 100th trophy in their history.

Sports.net’s view

Given that Manchester City are safely through to the knockout stages and they have no hope of catching Barcelona at the summit of Group C, expect Guardiola to rotate his squad ahead of this game, particularly with tricky league games against Arsenal and Liverpool in the coming weeks. City’s reserves should have enough in the tank to see off Celtic, but don’t be surprised if the away side spring a late shock. A home win looks rather unappealing at 1/3, but the draw could be far more enticing at 4/1 with Paddy Power, while a score draw appears even better value at 5/1 with William Hill.

The two clubs thrashed out a highly entertaining 3-3 draw back on Matchday 2, so goal scoring shouldn’t be an issue at the Etihad, and given that this game is something of a dead rubber, both sides may go all out in an attempt to inspire confidence for the games ahead. With this in mind, a bet on there being over 4.5 goals in the game looks tempting at 12/5 with Bet365, while over 5.5 goals comes in at 5/1. Of course, both teams may want to preserve energy and avoid any unnecessary injuries, resulting in a desperately boring 0-0 draw - 22/1 with Sky Bet.

  • Sports.net’s top tip: Draw and both teams to score - 5/1 with William Hill
