Vitality Netball Superleague - Round 17 Preview and Betting Tips

Updated Thursday 21st February 2019, 12:28 PM

As the regular Vitality Netball Superleague season enters its penultimate week, the mystery surrounding which teams will compete for this year’s crown still remains. Following a fine campaign, Loughborough Lightning are certain to finish top of the table and appear in the semi-finals, while Wasps and Manchester Thunder look almost certain to join them. The race for fourth place, however, is far from settled as the scuffle between Surrey Storm and Team Bath looks set to go right down to the wire. Will both teams hold their nerve or will cracks start to show as Round 17 begins?

The Fixtures

Severn Stars v Hertfordshire Mavericks - With neither team likely to finish higher than seventh, this game could be more about building momentum ahead of next season. Severn Stars haven’t quite made the impact they hoped for when they joined the Superleague fold ahead of this year’s campaign, but the women from Worcester have pulled off one or two surprise results and they will certainly be eager to add another scalp to their collection this Friday. The Stars will certainly fancy their chances against a Hertfordshire Mavericks side who have performed well below-par this term considering their strong finish to the 2016 campaign. This might be a dead rubber, but fans of both sides could be in for a real end-to-end contest.

  • Top Tip: Severn Stars to win - 8/13

Celtic Dragons v Wasps - Barring a catastrophic collapse and a huge swing in goal difference, Wasps should be all set to make their semi-final debut in their first Superleague season. One more win would be enough to see them over the line and that should come this weekend as the Coventry-based club travel to bottom-of-the-league Celtic Dragons. Wasps ran riot in the reverse fixture earlier in the season, registering an impressive 62-40 win. A similar scoreline could be on the cards when the two sides meet in Cardiff, especially given the efficiency with which Tamsin Greenway’s girls dispatch their opponents on the road.

  • Top Tip: Wasps to win (with -18.5 handicap) - 5/6

Loughborough Lightning v Team Northumbria - Loughborough Lightning showed no mercy in their last outing as they punished the defensive frailties of Celtic Dragons in a 74-44 thrashing. The Leicestershire ladies will be hoping to repeat that feat as they look to inflict a 14th defeat of the season on a Team Northumbria side who look destined to finish in ninth place. Expect another big win for Lightning, particularly if the league’s top scorer, Peace Proscovia, continues her fine form. The 27-year-old Ugandan boasts an impressive 88.1 percent strike rate this term and could improve upon that further against a weak Northumbria team.

  • Top Tip: Loughborough Lightning to win (with -18.5 handicap) - 5/6

Surrey Storm v Sirens - Monday night’s thrilling victory over Wasps ended Surrey Storm’s poor run of form and kept their hopes of picking up a third straight Superleague title alive. The girls from Guildford remain in fourth place, but just goal difference keeps them ahead of rivals Team Bath in the race for the final semi-final place. Storm should be able to increase the pressure by collecting another three points this Saturday, but Sirens aren’t a team to be underestimated, especially following their shock win over Tania Hoffman’s side in Round Eight. However, with Sirens marooned in sixth place, the determination of the Surrey players should be enough to see them over this hurdle in their final home game of the season.

  • Top Tip: Surrey Storm to win - 1/8

Manchester Thunder v Team Bath - Team Bath may be level on points with Surrey Storm in the race for fourth place, but the Somerset side arguably have the more difficult run-in. Away trips to Manchester and Coventry round off Bath’s season and they’re two games Anna Stembridge’s side certainly need to win if they are to stand any chance of progressing to the final four. However, this weekend they face a Thunder side who will be determined to end the season strongly ahead of the semi-finals and, in the wake of recent events up north, show the world that Manchester is not a city to be messed with.

  • Top Tip: Manchester Thunder to win - 4/11
