Vitality Netball Superleague - Round Five Preview and Betting Tips

Updated Thursday 21st February 2019, 12:32 PM

As Round Five of the Vitality Superleague season approaches, only two teams are yet to sample the bitter taste of defeat. With maximum points from their opening four games, Surrey Storm and Loughborough Lightning sit at the top of the table, locked in a battle for supremacy, but will both teams make it through the weekend unscathed, or will the likes of Wasps, Team Bath and Manchester Thunder peg back the early leaders?

The Fixtures

Severn Stars v Wasps Netball - Following a disappointing derby defeat to Loughborough Lightning, Wasps will be hoping to bounce back as quickly as possible as they aim to secure the Superleague title in their debut season. Round five sees the Coventry outfit facing a trip to eighth-place Severn Stars, a team who have picked up just one victory this season. Expect a reaction from Wasps in what could be a high-scoring contest.

  • Top Tip: Wasps Netball to win 1/12

Hertfordshire Mavericks v Celtic Dragons - Despite starting their season with a win over Team Northumbria, the Mavericks have struggled to find their feet of late. Last year’s beaten semi-finalists have looked a shadow of their former selves, losing out to Team Bath, Wasps and table toppers Surrey Storm in their last three outings. However, this weekend sees them face Celtic Dragons, a team who are winless this term and currently bottom of the division. This should be a straightforward win for the girls from Hertfordshire.

  • Top Tip: Hertfordshire Mavericks to win 1/20

Loughborough Lightning v Sirens - Lightning will enter their fifth fixture of the season full of confidence following last weekend’s win over local rivals Wasps. Four wins from four have seen the Leicestershire outfit climb their way up the table into second place, behind reigning champions Surrey Storm on goal difference alone. A fifth straight win should be on the cards as Sirens visit the Sir David Wallace Arena, but don’t expect the Scots to go down without a fight.

  • Top Tip: Loughborough Lightning to win 1/16

Team Northumbria v Manchester Thunder - After a shaky start to the season, Manchester Thunder look to be firing on all cylinders once again. Recent victories over  Sirens and Celtic Dragons, in which Beatrice Skingsley played a starring role, have propelled the 2014 champions up to fifth, six points from the summit. A third win in a row should be all but certain against a Team Northumbria side who are currently languishing at the wrong end of the table.

  • Top Tip: Manchester Thunder to win 1/10

Team Bath v Surrey Storm - Having dismantled Hertfordshire Mavericks last Saturday, Surrey Storm will be desperate to put another side to the sword as they hunt down a third successive league title. However, Monday’s game with Team Bath could well present the toughest task to date for the reigning champions. The Somerset side have lost just once this campaign and could call upon the defensive capabilities of Eboni Beckford-Chambers to keep the league’s top scorers at bay. Expect a tight contest, with Storm narrowly snatching the win.

  • Top Tip: Surrey Storm to win 1/6
