Vitality Netball Superleague - Round Nine Preview and Betting Tips

Updated Thursday 20th April 2017, 10:33 AM

Another intriguing round of Superleague fixtures saw the likes of Manchester Thunder and Wasps Netball tighten their stranglehold on a place in the top four, while defending champions Surrey Storm fell to a second straight defeat at the hands of Sirens. The teams now enter the halfway point of the season, and with Celtic Dragons picking up a surprise 55-52 win over Sirens in the first game of Round Nine on Monday, the realisation that reputation and league standing count for nothing is starting to hit home. There may be six points separating fourth and fifth, but don’t count on the race for a place in the final four being over just yet.

The Fixtures

Team Bath v Hertfordshire Mavericks - In their last outing, a topsy-turvy encounter with Manchester Thunder ended in a narrow defeat for Team Bath, a result that dealt a huge blow to their chances of finishing in the top four this season. After a second successive loss, the Somerset side now sit six points adrift of Thunder and could really do with a victory this Friday. And their prayers could be answered, as Hertfordshire Mavericks come to town. Despite picking up a much-needed three points against Severn Stars in Round Eight, the Mavericks have struggled for form this term and could present Bath with the perfect pick-me-up after their recent stumble.

Wasps Netball v Team Northumbria - After a slow start, Wasps turned on the style to blow Celtic Dragons away in Round Eight, racking up an impressive 62-40 win. The Coventry side now sit level on points with Surrey Storm in second and look well placed to secure a spot in the final four come June. Round Nine sees the team from the Ricoh Arena welcome Team Northumbria, a side who showed signs of promise after their first win of the campaign in Round Seven, before slumped to a devastating 47-70 defeat to Superleague leaders Loughborough Lightning in Round Eight. Another shellacking could be on the cards this weekend, especially if last season’s top scorer Rachel Dunn finds her rhythm.

Manchester Thunder v Surrey Storm - Having opened their season with six straight victories, Storm have faltered of late and now find themselves winless in two following their shock 65-59 defeat to Sirens in Round Eight. The reigning champions will be hoping to stop their slide with victory over Manchester Thunder in a rematch of the 2016 Grand Final. However, heading back down south with all three points will be no easy task, given Thunder’s impressive form of late. Karen Greig’s girls have not lost since Super Ten Weekend, when this weekend’s visitors ran out 58-48 winners. Be prepared for what promises to be a very tight game that could be decided by a few moments of individual brilliance from either side.

Severn Stars v Loughborough Lightning  -  After dismantling Team Northumbria in their last game, Loughborough Lightning extended their winning run to eight games and remain the only side with a flawless record this season. This weekend, the league leaders face a game away to Severn Stars, a team who have struggled to find their footing in their debut Superleague season. Despite their stuttering form, Eleanor Cardwell has proved herself to be lethal for the Stars, finding the target with 85 percent of her attempts this campaign; however, that probably won’t be enough to extinguish Lightning’s hot streak this time around. Expect a ninth win for the ladies from Leicestershire.
